68 W200 front drum/bearing assembly

Post by spesce »

1968 W200 100% original with 34,400 miles completely restored EXCEPT the front axle.....and wanted to drive for the memorial weekend. :shame

I was running the 37"s on the truck and hit a large bump at 60mph on the highway and then had a funny pull. :pale I drove home about 5 miles and everything seemed okay. I went for another drive and took a right, went a mile and then took a let on a main road. I heard a pow and hit the brakes, but knew the brakes were done. I turned on another side street and stopped the truck. The right front brake drum had brake fluid draining out. Luckily being in a residential neighborhood, I made it home mostly with going slow and used the emergency brake a few times.

I knew I had three, not so seated studs but torqued the nuts on the wheel. I seemed that I had broken a stud and the stud fell into brake area and broke the wheel cylinder in half.....I knew this drum was suspect, but not that easily. Now with the questions....

-I have purchased brake drums from NAPA and appear totally exact drum, but they do not come with the bearing part....What is this part called?
-Where can I purchase a whole brake drum assembly with bearings or just the inner part?
- The number on the inner wheel part that holds the wheel studs and appears to welded or attached to the brake drum is "86710 L"
- I have the manual, but this part is never shown good so any information helps.

I have pictures that I will post shortly once they make send from my phone.

Hub and drum from a later 44 Dodge axle fits as I have a '72 on mine. The inner bearing is the same actual bearing if IIRC but the inner race is different. Don't ask how I nearly found that one out! :pale :pale BTW, 37's are huge tires for a 44 series axle.
