Well, I just picked up a '61 Powerwagon with factory PTO winch on the front. Does anyone know what cable size those had on them from the factory or what is best to use? I'm in the market for a new cable and thought I would check with the experts on here first!
Thanks!

Re: Powerwagon Winch Question....
5/16 or 3/8 are the most common wire rope sizes for eight to ten thousand pound winches

Thanks for the reply.
The only other factory one I've seen around here seemed to have huge cable, maybe it was overkill though. I just thought they may use something out of the ordinary.

Re: Powerwagon Winch Question....
When the factory Braden winch was still on my 66W100 it had 5/8 cable. I broke it on a couple of occasions pulling hard. 5/16 or 3/8 is too light for a PTO winch. IMHO.
PTO winch's can get you in way more trouble than an electric one.

150 ft of 7/16" cable for the Braden LU-2 model.
I have 3 of these winches on the PW's and put new cable (150 ft 7/16") on them a few years back. I think you can get about 100 ft of 1/2" cable. You will more than likely shear the shear pin before you break 1/2 cable.

Re: Powerwagon Winch Question....
I do remember taking out the shear pin on a couple of occasions. Usually in a mud hole or someplace inconvenient. No stranger to PTO winch's.
Re: Powerwagon Winch Question....
Thanks for all the replies. I'll look into the 7/16" and see what I can find. I guess fom the factory they used a section of chain attached to the cable or was that a add-on?
And where's the best source for a couple extra shear pins?

I'd guess Tractor Supply or some farm implement place for the shear pin. Maybe they'd have a generic one that'd work.4xfourfun wrote:Thanks for all the replies. Chain was factory.
