Dana 44 broken
I took the front end out of my 1970 W-200 with the Dana 44....any thought where I might find a rebulid kit or a complete rebuilt diff? Also looking at maybe replacing the whole thing with a Dana 60 if i could find one.

Going the Dana 60 route would give you a way better front diff. Open knuckle style turn sharper than the closed style and are very simple to work on as well. Also will give you large disc brakes . Definitely a good upgrade plus also much stronger.
Re: Dana 44 broken
I have a 69 W200 that has a front axle that appears to have been opened up and worked on. I think it is a Dana 44 front but know little about axles. It is used as a snow plow so the front gets worked pretty hard. How can I tell what axle it is? What should I look for in getting a Dana 60? Ratio? If I find one how much will it cost? Can the 44 be beefed up? This is the data plate...by the way, what is the S.O. No. in the top center? Gosh...many questions.

Axle according to your data plate is the 3000 pound front and that tell me its the small knuckles. Ratio also according to data plate is 4:10. S O means special order but don't know what specifically it means. Fleet order ? Axle truss could be added but its still a 44. Diesel ere Dana 60 from 89 to 93 is an option as well as the Dana 60 used from middle 70's to early 80's. Some of the full time w200 and w300 used them. They will take locking hubs.69W200 wrote:9W200 » Tue Feb 12, 2013 6:26 pm

Re: Dana 44 broken
Thanks. I see a few Dana 60s for sale locally on Craigs. They want $800-1000, both have high pinions; one has 4:10. My truck does not have power assist brakes. Do disc brakes need power assist? What modifications can I expect to need? spring/steering?

Re: Dana 44 broken
I finally got the Dana 60 under it with Skyjacker 5 1/2" lift springs. For some reason the push/pull power steering system seems like it's not working. Not sure where to go with this. Also do I need to change the proportioning valve because the front end has disc brakes on it?

You need to have your springs mounted opposite of stock sweptline orientation. If you don't swap them end for end,you will have over 6 degrees of caster which makes for hard steering. You should run a proportioning valve or a combo valve with the disks up front unless your truck is always loaded. Stock sweptlines don't have one. It is just a splitter.rx1mtnman wrote:I finally got the Dana 60 under it with Skyjacker 5 1/2" lift springs. For some reason the push/pull power steering system seems like it's not working.
