D700 Transmission Questions

Post by sampson78 »

I have a D700 Dump truck that has a 361 with a five speed. I figure the transmission is a NP540 or NP541. I am not sure. Will the bellhousing work on a NP435? I do not want to tear truck apart if it wont work. Want to convert a D100 to a W200. Know where axles are located with all steering and suspension as well and transfer bracket. I have great frame and body. Have transmission and motor. Need bell, clutch set up and transfer. If my beel will work I am gonna use It. What else am I gonna need. Thanks Guys any help is appreciated.

I am not positive, but I don't think it will work. The 435 may bolt to that bell, but I think 435's & 540's have different input shaft lenghts, & the input on the 435 being too short.
At least this is what I gather from past readings. I could be wrong.
I have 3 540 5-speeds. One is behind 318poly, one is behind LA318, the third was from behind 361 same as yours. The bells are all similar, but not necessarily identical.

I replaced a bad NP435 with a good NP540 (1 - 2) and it fit the bellhousing with no issues.

But this was in a PC500 with a Perkins 6.354. I don't think it would matter with a gas bell H though.

From my experience I recall the D700's typically using a much larger 5 speed than the NP540- both the trucks I had actually ran an SAE style bolt pattern with a huge cast iron bell housing that had MASSIVE mounting ears on each side (think class 8 truck).

That said, if it turns out to be an NP540 in there, all the hydraulic clutch bell housings I have seen for the big block are drilled to accept both the 540 and the 435 transmissions. As Bucky pointed out the input shaft shafts are much larger in diameter, so finding the correct 13" clutch to fit the input on your 435 might prove difficult at best. I don't recall the flywheel I had being drilled to accept a smaller pressure plate and clutch assembly, either. The 540 setup I had ran the 188 tooth flywheel with the 8-bolt crank flange, FWIW.

The D700 seems to be an uncommon model. There is a brochure that goes from D600 to D800. The 600 uses the NP435, NP540, NP540SF or AT540. The D800 uses the NP542, NP542SF, S5652A, S5756B or AT540. These probably aren't all used for all engines or years. The D700 probably wasn't produced all years.

There is a D700 in the registry showing the VIN plate with a NP540. Does your VIN plate show anything?

The D700 wasn't offered all years. Seems to be gone from literature (1973) but reappeared around 75/76. 77 was last years for medium dutys in the US.
