Question: Third eye?

Post by 1meanswepty »

I am curious about options available on 1970 model year PW's. My dad owned a 70 W100 that was a ranch truck. He bought it used in 1972 and used it as a work tool and to pull his camp trailer elk hunting and horse trailer for 30 years. He gave the truck to me and has since passed away. I have big plans to do a major restification type project on the truck, but that is for another section on this site. My question is this, the truck had a third high beam headlight mounted on either the bottom of the radiator support or the front crossmember. It was a sealed beam type light and had a metal housing. It appeared to be factory to me and had been on the truck as long as anyone can remember. After he gave me the truck I promptly removed the cyclops looking light. This was probably 15 years ago, I more than likely still have the light sitting around somewhere. I was curious if maybe this was some sort of snow plow package item or if somebody put this light on a LONG time ago. I am new here and have spent many hours looking through other members builds and questions. I think I am full on addicted to swepties at this point. I own three and am working on a fourth. Thanks in advance.

I'm sure it was added later. Plow lights are mounted above the plow. Since the snowplow wasn't considered a factory option until 71, an earlier factory equipped plow truck would have a SERT number for the plow equipment.

Dodge did have a Sno-Fiter option in 71. It wasn't called Sno-Commander until much later. This might be an original (I had the sound off when I watched it).

Was the third light similar to the quartz "Super-Lite" that was an option on 69-70 Dodge Polaras?

It wasn't graphed into the grill like it was supposed to be there or anything. It was under the front bumper right square in the center of the truck. Must have been one of those weird custom farmer modifications.

Interesting video. :Thumbsup They did refer to the package as the
Sno Commander instead of the Sno Fiter. The truck has 13K
original miles on it and was bought new and used somewhere in
NY State. The host of the video "kind of" knew what he was talking
about but he'd be doing himself a big favor by coming to this site
to consult with the real experts. :Thumbsup

The "third eye" was more than likely added by your dad. The two
lights on the plow frame were all that Meyer would've supplied. Many
folks added a light in the rear of the truck and kept the tailgate off
during Winter. :Thumbsup I'm thinking that your dad might have
put this light on to provide some light closer to where the edge of
the blade was. This might have kept him from slipping off the drive
he was plowing. :Thumbsup :welcome :usa

Yes I am lucky enough to know Rob, he has already helped me out with some trim pieces and the like. There also another member real close to me... I have a lot of resources for parts. I do have quite a little collection started on my own too... How many chrysler motors can you fit in a two car garage?

I guess I wasn't wrong when I stated "Dodge did have a Sno-Fiter option in 71", but I did thin that was the 1st year. Turns out they were available earlier.
