Safety Wire

Hi, my name's Dave I'm new here. I have a '68W100 with a Dana 44F. Does anyone know what size safety wire the factory used for the front spindle bolts? I have an old shop manual, but it doesn't say anything about it. Thanks.

My best guess would have to be .032 wire, if you can find stainless, that would be your best buy for a 4x4. Don't hold me to the size though...im about 7600 miles away from my powerwagon..can't give you the 100% positive answer.

Thanks for the reply. 0.032" is what I was thinking. What threw me off was the bolt heads are cross drilled about 0.120", which seemed big for 0.032 wire.

At work today, when I was back in the welding bay getting the burrito I left in the welder's rod oven (he hates it when I do that), I asked him about the 0.032 lock wire. He trotted out his "Machinery's manual" and a calculator, and 30 min. later found me and said that 0.032 fully annealed 302 stainless wire (the stuff we use at work) will work for bolts that take up to 90 ft-lbs. of torque. So 0.032 wire it is. Thanks again for your reply.

not a problem...same stuff we use on the F-16s...and were talking huge torque here.
