What to look for.

Post by 6man71 »

I am going to a auction next month to look at a 1970 W.There was no other info on it other than it had a snowplow on it.I dont know anything about W models and looking for suggestions on what to look as far as the drivetrain.They salt the roads here until they are white so I would guess there is rust in the usual places. I check the front + rear axle, gearbox and transfercase +
the axles between the axles/transfercase + the frame when i check a 4x4 (and offcourse the engine).

Thats the main things i pay extra attention about besides the usually checkout. :study

/*
If it has no Freewheel hubs in front axle, check the front axle, its rotating and travels as far as the rear axle.

If it has freewheel hubs then check the kingpin bearings/bushings because they may not been lubricated
( you need to engage the hubs about 1:a month so the grease/oil splaches around in the knuckles)
You may need a hijack for that so you can "rock" the wheel.

Check the frame for cracks and dents(?) if it has been overloaded, offroaded or snowplowed and
also the leafsprings so they are equal.
