Need help ID'ing

Post by 6Lfarms »

Hello all. Being lurking for quite some time, and finally decided to join as I near pulling the trigger on my first Swepty. Have been looking for several months and found a '68 advertised as 3/4 ton 4x4, however my gut tells me different. It seems pretty clear this a 1/2 ton body on some other frame, but I don't know enough about these trucks yet to tell what exactly it is. Here's a few pics. My main concerns are the lack of lock out hubs, the strange shock mounts, and the front driveshaft having what appears to be a newer style flange on the t-case end. (I must also admit I'm not sure if it's even on the correct side).

Thanks in advance for any help you all can provide.

Welcome to the site. :welcome :usa It looks
like someone installed a full-time 4wd front
axle. If the t-case is the correct one for the
axle, you might have less to do to get this
truck put together. The original bell housing
cross member has been hacked out and it
appears as though half of the leaf spring perch
has been left hanging in the breeze on each
side. You should box the frame in that area
and strengthen those perches. The upper shock
mounts look stock. I can't tell by the pictures
but it looks like someone might have re-worked
the steering set up too. :thinking I'm sure
others will add more information.

Thanks. I may just keep looking. Although I could probably scrap this for what they want for it, frame repair is not really something I was looking to get into.

Yeah.... that left front leaf spring looks
kind of tweaked... :thinking you might
have quite a chore on your hands in
trying to straighten things out. If
it is cheap enough.... it might make
a good parts truck. Ya gotta have a
parts truck or two....

Also, for future reference in your search, the shock mount, if you're referring to the angle iron that extends above the frame for the upper shock mount is actually correct. I've seen two different lengths, one like in the picture and one that only sticks up about half that much above the frame. Also, the cross member that's been cut out was eliminated in 69 when they went with a mechanical linkage clutch which I can't tell in the pictures whether or not that truck has a clutch master cylinder next to the brake master cylinder or not.
