1963 Powerwagon W300 Front drum brakes 4x4

Post by VolksD100 »

Hi I have 1963 PowerWagon W300 with a Dana 90 front axle, it has drum brakes, and I can't find them anywhere. The truck was my pops and he said he couldn't find any drums 10 years ago so that's why it sits. You have to pump the brakes 10 - 15 times just to get some pedal, Anyone have any suggestions? Maybe a disc brake conversion, or an alternate drum that will fit?

I've been hearing of spray welding then regrinding the drums, if they are worn real bad.
Wheel cylinnders and shoes may be hard to find but can be rebuilt by various brake shops.

might be worth looking into

Your right dana 70, fat finger typing on my part..

The problem is the drums are obsolete, and there is no meat left for the shoes to reach out and touch...

Spray welding is when they reline the inner part of the drum with weld, then re-cut it right?

Drums for the Dana 70 of that vintage are real hard to find. I've seen a couple show up on Ebay, but they went for a lot of $$s. Repairing your existing drums are probably the best option.

Ive had a 62 W300 daily driver since 1984. I found 8 NOS drums over the yrs. 2 I bought, as the cost was reasonable. The other 6 I found in the late 90's, the guy wanted $750 EACH! I did not buy any of those! A gutsy solution is to reline the shoes with 3/8" pad, rather than the 1/4" they are supposed to have. Then pray your worn out drums stay together.
