1961 Dodge Crew Cab short bed powerwagon

Post by drew440 »

I am going to purchase a PowerWagon. I have owned a 1970 D200 2 wheel drive in the past. I have always wanted this style of truck. I need some advice on buying one of these early crew cabs. It comes with a poly 318 and manual gearbox. Not really sure of gear ratio as I have not seen it in person. Can I still get parts for this truck? Is the bed flooring (metal) being reproduced or can I tear it all out and put in a nice wood floor like the factory did in 1970? I really think this truck would fill my needs for a people hauler and for a general use truck. It is rust free for the most part, but will need some things like tailgate, exhaust, bed flooring removed and reworked etc. Thanks for any info you can give me on this type of truck as it is a big undertaking on my part and I do not want to buy something I cannot get parts for. Thanks again.

If it is truly a 61 4 wheel drive crew cab with very little rust you must get it. In 61 Dodge did not build crew cabs in the factory, they were sent out to conversion companies to be made into crew cabs. Also the fact that it is 4 wheel drive also makes it desirable. It could be the only truck in existance with that configuration. Also most Dodge trucks in 61 came with the slant 6. Do you know for sure it is a 61?

Tailgates for that era are a little hard to come by but if you look around you can find one. I'm guessing the truck has a wide bed if it has a metal floor. The Utiline beds would have had a wood floor. Exhaust would depend on exactly what you are looking for. Many shops will make an exhaust to fit the truck.

Do you have any photos of this truck?

The owner states that it is a 1961. It has a 318 Wide Block engine. I do not have any pics as of know. I will put my perfectly rust free Mercedes diesel up for sale and hopefully have the funds to by this truck. I have always wanted one of the early trucks and I will have to get it regardless of the price.

The truck is officially a 1962. The title says 1962. It has a little more rust than I really wanted, but can you be picky about stuff that is old? I found a pretty decent tailgate for the truck, but again it has some wear on it and again can you really be picky? Are there any pics of what this truck should look like as I am pretty sure it has had some mods along the way?

You could be a bit more picky if you lived in the Southwest, West Coast or Pacific Northwest. In your
region, as is the case with my region, we can't be as choosy. Look closely at the floorboards, cowl
area [interior around the fresh air vents as well as exterior], rocker panels, cab mounts, roof line
and door bottoms as these are the usual rusted areas. As far as parts go..... we can be a little
more picky if we have the $$ to buy items from our friends in milder climate regions. Get the
information off of the VIN tag..... it'll tell us more about this truck. :study

I believe there are now 3 known 65 Power Wagon crew cab long bed trucks. Make that early 65s.

As far as 61-62 goes, aside from my 61' Crew Cab, I've seen one 62' Crew Cab. Mine's an odd-ball shorty so, it ignoring that, the major difference I remember with the 62 was that the metal 'trim' around the ceiling had a cross-over piece that mine did not. I will say the nice thing with a short Crew Cab is it's easier to park!!
