newbie with Q's.....

Post by randynoguts »

hello everyone. just got a '66 w200 /6 4speed W/W . utiline ex military. was an airforce truck previous owner painted it OD green. came with a A frame crane for the front or rear to use with the winch.. i think i got a god deal but you please tell me? i paid 1k for it. running . i had the complete brakes system redone last week and been driving her around getting lots of pointing and thumbs up.. two questions i have are 1. it came with 8x19.5 wheels .. replacement tires are very pricey and they dont make these that are on it anymore. very deep lug goodyears from WAAAYYY back. can i fit some 16.5 's? these are hitting 33= inches with half the tread gone so i should be able to do 33 's in a 16.5. the reason im going 16'5 is i already have some rims and dont want to spend on nice rims to get beat. the second question is 1st and second gear and reverse are qwiet, but there is a growling in 3and 4.. but only up to 35mph then it gets qwiet again. any ideas beyond changing the trans oil? i have no clue how to post pics so that will have to wait... any advice would be nice thanks, randy

Welcome!

I can't comment on the wheels, but I'd say that if it's not rusted out, $1k was a great deal!

Eric,
Sounds like you got a good deal! 16.5s will work fine, you want to make sure that you have less than 3.75" backspace or you may get rubbing on your draglink. If you want to sell the 19.5s, I am interested. :Thumbsup

Do you have locking hubs or drive flanges on your front axle?

thanks for the quick responses... no its not rusted out. i does have a small hole in each door but the size of a silver dollar but the surrounding metal is still not gone and full of holes. im happy.. it has the original (looks to me) wood in the bed. pintle hitch ,spot light, 3 radios under dash, all kinds of antenna, dual alternator set up but only one is present, dual batteries, nothing in it is 24 volt anymore so i probably wont go to the extent of replacing the second alt. im sure it was a (base) modification for military radios etc.. oh and an aux gas tank with switchover in cab.

dig doug, ill keep ya in mind when i decide what im gonna do with the tire situation. what i need is drivers door latch mechanism... the little star shaped thing on the door.. mine is round almost and wont hold the door closed every time..any body got one? randy

ohh forgot to ask another thing ;0). im gonna pick your brains like a hungry zombie, anyway on the data plate it lists rear axle weight rating as 5500 front 2800this sound right? rear axle "41" model 60... so would one assume its a dana 60? with a 4.10 ratio? it runs like its lower like a 5.30. most military truck are like that that i drove when i was in anyway. trans lists 4 syn... again to assume 4 speed syncro? cause this one definately aint 1st speed syncro ! and NP435 which again i will assume is new process 435. thanks...

You are correct: Rear Dana 60 with 4.10 ratio, front should be Dana 44 axle. NP435 is synchronized 2-3-4 only, the granny low 1st gear (6.68 ratio) is not. Reverse ratio is 8.25
Winch most likely is Braden LU-2 if its the factory PTO type. Supposedly Dodge rated them at 8000lbs while Braden had them at 10,000. At least that's what I have read online.

The transmission noise could be a sign of future trouble, but those things were never too quiet to begin with. I'd change the gear oil in it. I've heard good things about going back with Royal Purple.

Check axle differentials while you are at it. I use on oil syphon (looks like a grease gun w/o handle) to get most of the old oil out of a differential w/o removing the cover. Of course if it leaks anyways you may as well drop the cover & do it the normal way, having an inspection once its opened. :Thumbsup

You did good!

I haven't priced 19.5 tires, but I know 16.5s aren't cheap anymore... I bought my Sweptline to steal the 16" wheels/tires off it for another truck I had. It was going to be cheaper that way than buying tires for the 16.5s I had.

Sounds like you got a good deal on your truck, too. If you're up for a drive in it, Aug 1st. is a Mopar show in Bremerton (www.allaroundmopars.com).

well guys the trans oil and tranfer case oil change did not help.. :0(... i guess ill drive it till something breaks and then fix it...

show in bremerton! im there!

also got a new muffler today, cant hardly hear it run now! found myself over reveing from a stop.

got me a screaming deal on new tires too! the place i got my muffler was next to the local Les Schwab. went over and asked again about some used 19.5's... first guy said nope. then a guy behind the counter said wait we got some in trade yesterday.. so we went and looked and they were bridgestone M724's. which retail for over 300 each.. theya re 90% + tread and i got all four for 400 bucks... cha ching! so with all new brakes, new tires and new muff, im set for a while i hope.

This sounds familiar... switch into low range, I bet your problem will go away. My 65 w100 does the same thing, growls like mad when moving in 3rd (but only in high range) In my case it's the gear that selects hi/low (i think the FSM calls it a sliding clutch) rattling around on the output shaft in the transfer case due to worn shims and bearings. pop your PTO cover off and see if the gear wobbles around (engine off)

thanks sterno, i will try that tomorrow.. i took her out on the freeway today for the first real trip.. very qwiet at freeway speeds was doing an "indicated 60mph" and few were passing on a road that routinely sees 70+ speeds so with the 33 inch tires the speedo may be off..... but when i slowed, there was the rattle and clank. will update when i try it.. :0)

If you want to be absolutely sure, disconnect the prop shaft from the back of your 4 speed (be sure to index mark it) and run through the gears while standing still. if the noise goes away, it's not the trans. reconnect the prop shaft and disconnect the driveshafts from the transfer case. If the noise shows up again, you've found your culprit (tedious I know but that's what i did to isolate the problem on mine). if it's still quiet your problem is at the axles or with the driveshafts.

I was quoted $700 cdn for a rebuild, assuming there's no major internal damage. Since I'm looking to swap to more modern driveline (disc d60 front/rear & 5 or 6 speed manual) i decided to forgo the rebuild and wait until I have the parts I want or the t-case goes BOOM.
Rebuild kits sell on ebay for approx $250 but I've no idea how much work it is to overhaul one of these cases. Buying another case at the wreckers may be an option, but how long until it too starts to growl.
Good Luck

one thing to check on the growling also is the Tcase mounting botls can come loose on these trucks. also check all ujoints and slip yokes for wear, and make sure all the drivleines are timed correctly.
