Hello,
I have a 1970 D300 thinking about making it a W. I have found a 1975 dodge 1 ton dana 60 for sell, do not know ratio yet on it. Will it be the best way to go, I know I will need transfer case and other parts. That's 200 miles away! Or can I use a dana 44 out of 85 Jeep wagonneer truck with 273 ratio, that's 10 miles away!
I'm new and green about this, have had truck ten years now ,it has sit for 4 years, ready to start to rebuild, lots of learning to go
Thanks,
Chris

The wagoneer axle will be the wrong width, wrong lug pattern (6 lug), and wrong axle ratio. If you did manage to cobble under the truck, you'd probably grenade it pretty quickly. Get the 60, period.

Powerwagoncrazy is 100 percent correct. Besides you wouldn't want to make a guy with a B.A. truck like his mad.
if you use a 44 make sure you find one from a 3/4 dodge. It'll go right in and be strong.
Can't go wrong with a 60 especailly if its got disc brakes.

A true conversion to make it a W300 would be to put in a Dana 70 with the same gear ratio as you have in back. They did not wimp out and start putting 60s in the front of dodge 1 tons till a few years later. nothing beats a 70 up front.

Re: Dana 60 vs. 44 for swap-out?
My 75 powerwagon originally came with a "bignut" 44 which grenaded everytime I beat on it. I replaced it with a 60 unit and haven't had a problem since. I'd go with the 60 especially if you intended to take it off the pavement.

The 70 was used thru 74 & was closed knuckle-drum brakes....The 60 began in 75 & was open knuckle-disc brakes. Both were available in certain 3/4 tons too. I have owned more than one of each in a W200.

Re: Dana 60 vs. 44 for swap-out?
70F's are burly! The one under the front of my '67 W200 was pirated from an ex-air force 1972 W200. The sweetest part was the step up from my original 12x2 drums to the 12x3's on the 70F. That combined with the 70B rear (12x3 brakes as well) really turned my truck around as far as stopping power. All my 12x2 stuff was new, too. When I went to the 70 axles I also did braided stainless brakelines, which I recommend to anyone putting a truck together. They make for a WAY firmer pedal. On a side-note, steer clear of 70F axles from 1969 trucks- they have 14" diameter drums and brake parts aren't available. You can get your old shoes relined, but finding drums is impossible.

Re: Dana 60 vs. 44 for swap-out?
Yes, almost a year later, I found with help of another member (duke21),Thanks Doug! A 70f dana for my D300, now I can convert to 4wd,6wd? It's a dually rearend. It is a 69' with 14in. drums, but everything spins freely, beggers can't be choosers! Sometimes it takes time, but it pays-off to wait. Could have Dana 60f but too far to drive to get.
