NP205 rebuild kits

Post by DukePW »

Hello everybody,
I've been searching for a rebuild kit (seals& bearings) for my NP 205 transfercase. It's a twin stick with a PTO winch. I can't find any kits available for the features mentioned above. Can't someone point me in the right direction?
Goes without saying I'm looking for quality at a reasonable price.
Thanks for your help.

I think Novak sells rebuilds for about anything. Not 100% sure of that, but they do have a good website about the drivetrain parts.
What a mess.

Thanks guys I'll try to give those guys a ring.
I'm still all ears if anyone knows anyone else who might have them?

I noticed on a lot of sites they mention that dodge only used the NP205 T-case starting from 1969? My plate says right on it "np205" and it's a '67. Maybe I'm a special case because it's a Fargo???

I'm not positive about the 1969 introduction date for the 205, but that's what I've always read and it was the first single stick transfer case used by Dodge.Seems like earlier model W-series used a twin stick 201 t-case that had the parking brake attached to the rear output. You mentioned yours to be a twin stick. Could it be a 201?

I'm not sure but I don't think the 205 came out in any brand until '69. '68 and prior should have the twin stick 201 as mentioned and at least '67 up did not have the rear parking brake attachment. Parking brakes on those use the rear brakes. Not sure when that change occurred. If you have a Six States in your area they likely have the parts you seek or can send you in the right direction. I got mine from a trans place in Portland. I can get their name/number if you need it. Just can't recall it now but I have it in my PW file. BTW, I have a later 205 in mine so I don't know if they have anything for yours if it is in fact a 201.

:banghead
don't know why I thought it was np205 in my head. I'm looking at the tag info. now on my truck and it dosen't specify what the T-case is. And yes it does have the rear park brake, twin sticks, PTO. Possibly a NP201 your saying.....

Arent the parts pretty much the same in a 201 to 205?
If it is twin stick, it definately is a 201.

I have heard that also. I've not had a 201 apart but it is a way larger case than the 205 so I tend to take that with a grain of salt.

The 201 uses more tapered roller bearings, the 205 uses more needle bearings.I have seen rebuild kits for both on ebay.

Great thanks guys.
Forgot to mention, where can I find good instructions to do the rebuild?
I want to learn to do this myself.

Yes that is DC Dave Carillo, at Job Rated or DC Trucks.
You can find all of that and more at his web site or the link at the eBay listing.
He also has transmission parts and hydraulic bell housing dust cover boots.

Well I ordered a complete np201 rebuilt kit, all bearings and seals from quad4x4. It's been a few weeks since then and I guess they're waiting for one more seal to come in before they ship it. I'll let you know how it works out.

I still would like a rebuild manual or something like that but I can't find anything. I do know a guy at the gym who used to work for mister transmission, perhaps I better re-aquaint myself with him, lol.

From what I own and have seen, the last year for the np201 ebrake was 65. I have a 65, it has the ebrake, I just bought a 66, it doesn't, and neither does my 67. A 201 is similar to a 205, but as mentioned earlier, there are more tapered rollers in a 201. I rebuilt mine, if you have access to a press, it will help. Also, the output gear has torsional springs that will need to be dealt with. Take pictures as you tear it down, I will check again to see if I have a manual that covers it. I have worked in the trans industry for 30 years, I had built most tcases there was, but untill I did my own, I had not seen a 201. It might be difficult to find someone who has done one. I will help if I can, pm me if you need help. I just finally got the last pieces I need to put the ebrake on the back of mine, thanks Jack.
