'71 Engine Swap 360 to 440?????

Post by ShortTrack10 »

How difficult would it be for me to replace a 360 with a 727 in a '71 Power Wagon with a 440 with a 727 out of a 1975 D-100? They are both long bed, 1/2 tons and four wheel drive. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I think the 75 has a married transfer case so the transmission would be the problem. You'd have to either find a big block 727 with a short tailshaft and use the 71 transfer case, or fabricate mounts in the 71 to use the married setup.

As mentioned, if the transfer case is married, it will not work. You will need a
married transmission or a short tall 727 to use with your existing divorced case.

If you find a married big 727 and transfer, use the cross member that was with
the married case and you are good to go.

Otherwise, check out the changes I had to do to use a long tail 727 with a divorced
case in my Crew Progress thread in the Photos section. The transfer case needs to
be moved back to make room for the longer transmission. The drive shaft lengths
will also need to be altered.

However you say you have a 360, so the truck has already been altered some.
What is the current transfer case? Another option could be to use an Ultrabell
to convert your existing small block 727 to mate with the big block motor.
Just another option. Not sure which is best without more details.
