4x4 observation

Post by MountainMoparRobin »

took a look at the suspension on a 2007 Durango 4x4, seems that the front is the same as the front wheel drive cars with steering supplied by a Power Rack, then the tranfer case links the front to the rear, :thinking :study Aren't the older 4x4 setups just he opposite??

What do you mean by opposite? The "car-like" ride and handling comes from making it like a car. Rugged 4x4s are becoming scarcer every day.
What a mess.

Front wheel drive cars use a transaxle and the engines are mounted sideways. How is a Durango like this? :thinking
From your post I don't get exactly what part you think is car like. The transfer case is attached to the rear of the transmission just like any other married 4x4 truck. The front driveshaft connects to the front differential which cars don't use.

the Durango is full size, as big or bigger than the Tahoe,

the front axle's are the same as a car, you don't have the front differential "Pumkin" as in traditional 4x4's it looked as if the axle's went into the transmission, just like the cars :thinking
by the way truck owners, the rack on the Durango is bigger than the Mustang II, interesting how these things get overlooked when doing IFS swaps

It has independent front suspension, but the pumpkin is still there. It is otherwise the same, more or less.

My '02 Durango underneath is a Dakota pickup. Not sure about the '07 though.

I'm going to take a camera, for I also thought it to be the same, but the transaxle's were different :banghead
