Any landscapers OUT THERE??

A good question for a Landscaper (or those that deal with lawns) First, we NEVER EVER had a nice lawn but it was at least green with "whatever" that grew. Earlier this year I had a new septic system put in. They spread grass seeds with straw covering it and as the grass came up, some areas look nice, and other areas NOT so nice. Some of the grass looks "hungry" and is very thin and brownish BUT even though it looks that way, it is still growing up. I've been told by a neighbor to use starter fertilizer and/or peat moss. He is not a landscaper guy. Also, I had always "heard" that you do NOT use fertilizer on new grass... but then again, I had never heard of Starter Fertilizer either.

Before you ask... I do water it most days about 40 min. for the new grass area. Sure could use a few days of nice rain as I know that 10 min. of rain beats an hour of water with a sprinkler. Anyway...

Ideas? Thoughts?

either a nice layer of top soil or maybe mixing in some cow manure or something like that

Yeah, Probably needs a mix of good nutrients on top which makes me think the fertilizer would work best. I can't afford to cover the yard with top soil though...

From personal experience. What I did after backfilling with creek gravel was a few tons of horse manure spread with the neighbors spreader. Two years later it grows better than the lawn.

Horse manure I can get for free, but I think I'll need to wait till the grass is more stabilized before adding that. That stuff is pretty HOT from what I remember. (I may be wrong and forgot though )

What I used was from the bottom of the pile. Probably two years since it was part of the horse.

yeah i can see old horse manure working great
store bought fertilizer may have too strong nitrates and just burn the grass
thing any manure is the way to go .....its been so dry up here nothing growing ....

It sure has been dry ! Our water bill went up quite a bit from me watering that so called "lawn".

ha yes sad part is that manure isn't free
we are all paying for it ......just nutz
