Thinking of buying this '66 sweptline, opinions?

Post by MileHighdart »

So, local kid has this '66 for sale, his ad says that a previous owner put a pre-64 122" bed on it. But as you can see from the pics, it's not the right bed.
There's a 6" gap between the cab and the bed.
So I'm wondering how much hassle and how much money do you think to find the right bed for it?
And looking for opinions on the price for the truck in this condition.

Truck has a '71 318, and a manual trans mp435 with the granny gear first. Bad throwout bearing. Has had some front end work, drag link and tie rods, supposedly new tires.

Is it worth picking this up for $2850 ???

Is that inner door handle wrench glued on, or what? Fixing the door latch will require the panel to come off.
There is some hard to find dash trim and a white wheel inside. Nice caps too.
Looks like some serious floor/rocker/door bottom rot - common and real work/$ to restore.
Pre 65 beds have a different wheelbase, thus the gap. Finding the proper bed, if a long bed, isn't too difficult for a 66. In the realm of a few hundred $. What wheelbase is on the door tag? 128" is a long bed, 114" is a shortbed. Shortbeds are not easy to find. That early bed on it is way harder to find and would bring decent money, more than the cost of the correct one, especially with the nice tailgate!
Overall, looks fairly straight, which is a plus, rot is a negative.

Weather or not it is worth what they are asking is ultimately up to the buyer. First consider how much of the work you are able to do yourself. Labor can get quite expensive. Then what parts may be available near you. In my experience almost all prices are negotiable. Having a budget and a goal helps too.

Well I got into town today and stopped by to take a quick look at it.

Total rust bucket. Rusted through the bottom of the fenders, doors, rocker panels, and even the bottom rear corners of the cab.

Only thing that wasn't rusted out was the bed, which isn't even the right one.

Told him I'd pass, but good luck with the sale.

I'll keep looking.

If your the same MileHighdart from FABO then you already know how far we went to find one of these trucks that was not completely rotted out. There just aren’t many options in our part of the country... And even though my truck isn’t rusted too badly, it still suffers from a massive amount of incorrect parts installed incorrectly! There are some very helpful folks here though. I’ve already started collecting various parts and pieces to attempt to make it all work together. Good luck finding a suitable project!!
