What Is It About These 318 Engines?

Post by Dale »

I keep reading and hearing about folks who have a "318 polly", or a "318 LA", and even a 318 Magnum.

What are the differences? I'm not sure I can tell what 318 I have.

I'm a sucker for Uncle Tony's explanations of such things.
He calls the 318 poly the engine Chrysler should have developed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YU0Eo2f0vKg

Well I guess, from the article and video, I got an LA 318? I know my push rods are not that "slanted", though I'm forgetting what side the valve springs are on when I changed out the valve cover gaskets. My documentation, study, and note taking has probably improved since then. I'll have to keep up on the differences to gain more.

I caught on to UTG just before his 100th video. There is a lot I missed too. He did comment on my W100 though! For me, he has a lot to offer, like this forum.

Thank you for the information, good stuff!

There are several ways to easily tell whether its an LA or poly 318. Here are a few.

Exhaust port configuration on the head:
0-0-0-0 is a poly
0-00-0 is an LA

Valve stems all in a row is an LA
Valve stems on opposite sides of the rocker arm shaft is a poly.

2 bolts on the top of the valve cover is a poly (one near each end)
Several bolts around the edge of the valve cover is an LA

Lower edge of the valve cover scalloped is a poly.
Lower edge straight is an LA
