New '71 D200 owner

Post by L46D »

Hi All,

Bought a D200 yesterday over in Wenatchee. Rode my motorcycle over and then threw it in the back and drove it home about 120 miles. I wasn't sure it would make it but it did just fine.

It has a 360 and auto trans reportedly out of a motorhome with about 60k miles on it.

Floor pans rusted out, couple of spots of rust on the lower door skins and tailgate. The body is actually really straight.

I will use it as a work truck until I start a restored on it at some point in the near future.

My first question is what is the best way to prevent the less serious spots of rust from getting worse until I start working on the trucK?

Thanks,

Greg

Yes I was thinking something like a rust treating primer? Any brand suggestions that are known to be effective?

For basic frame coating, I use Rustoleum "Rusty Metal Primer" [2 brush coats]
and then Rustoleum "Semi-Gloss Black" [2 brush coats]. :2cents

Does that neutralize the rust? I'll have to look into that. It sounds like what I may need.

You can buy spray cans of rust converter. Walmart, Lowes, Home Depot, most auto parts stores...

They work just fine, regardless of brand. I’m partial to Rustoleum, but mainly because you can find it any/every where in the country. And the Rustoleum version forms a nice heavy, sandable base primer.
If I didn't build it, it ain't mine.
