1970 d300

Post by 70CCLB »

Hi everyone

New member and first post here on the forum and was just looking for a little info. I just picked up this classic Sweptline but can’t find too much info on it.

Really I’ve been searching the web and forums like this to see if I could find someone out there with a similar truck with not much luck. It’s a 1970 crew cab long box utiline truck with a side mount spare tire carrier. It came from Washington state as a railroad service truck, so it’s in ok shape as far as rust and rot goes.

I’m just wondering if anyone knows how “rare” the truck is? My plans are to fix it up and make it road worthy the way it looks now. Any info would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance!

There seems to be other treasures there on that property.

I don't know how rare/scare the crew is. There doesn't seem to be alot of them long-beds left. It looks complete, is it?

How long has it been dormant, why was it parked to begin with?

Is that a 9' or 8' bed?
Crewcab 300's are very rare and I don't recall ever seeing one with a ute bed on it. It is missing the steps under the doors.

Its been sitting for a while for sure, i think 2001 was the last time it was on the road. Still has the washington plate on the front bumper. It has a LA 318 motor in it, so not sure if it has the original motor/trans in it or not.

The guy i bought it from bought a few of them over the years to complete some of his own project trucks. Luckily i got to it before he did too much with it. It runs and moves but needs plenty of work, it'll be a project for a while for sure.

PWRWGNDRVR,
Its an 8' bed, and same here. Ive been searching all kinds of fourms and websites and haven't come across even a picture of a crew cab with an 8' ute bed. But im not an internet junky either

Likely the LA318 is original. Poly's were gone by then. These trucks usually has a 225 six or the 318. 383 was also offered, at least in other light duty trucks.

Since it runs & moves, they gets the value up out of the "junk/salvage" price range.

According to the production tables, there were 2,300 D300 crew cabs built in 1970. That number seems high to me.

From this angle it is hard to tell, but this may be another D300 Crew with a long Utiline Bed.

I think only the regular cab 300 series had the 9' bed. Crew cabs, both 200 & 300, would be either 6.5' or 8'.

http://sweptline.com/hist/prod_info.html. It's taken from the book mentioned on that page. I checked the book as well to make sure the number is the same and it is.

those are the ifrst pics of crew cab ute beds I have ever seen as well. And I scour the web looking for D300s fairly often when im bored. i have owned quite a few regular cab D300s over the years. The rail roads are know for ordering custom trucks from dodge since before ww2. they made some called shuttle wagons in the sweptline era.

Really a cool looking truck and nice to see that combination. I did get my hands on a 1:25 resin kit of a D300 crew cab and a 8foot utiline bed last winter. I was a little unsure if they even offered that combination as I did not find any pictures when I searched.

I have a 66 W300 crew. I've only ever seen 1/2 and 3/4 ton crews. Yours is the only other one ton crew.

If its the original small block, it should be an LA318.

Do yourself a favor and buy a service manual for it. They are available as re-pops.

I've found that the one tons are a little bit of a different breed when it comes to the running gear. Parts are a little harder to find. With a 70, you may be in better shape as you don't have the obsolete 6X7.25" bolt pattern.

I’ve been tinkering on it lately, I really can’t wait to drive it this spring

I did end up buying a service manual for it a few weeks ago, as I have some electrical problems to figure out.

Does yours have a Ute bed?

Did some work to it. Fixed up the bed, interior, lights and got it road worthy. Still needs work like any old truck that’s has been sitting for a long time. It runs, drives, stops and gets a LOT of looks when driving around.
