What do you think it's worth?

Post by Danpd69 »

I hate to be one of those guys, but I would rather get input from the experts here on the forum prior to making any decisions.

I've been looking for a W100 Short Box for a while and came across this one.

Description from owner: Floors are soft, will need partial replacement and drivers side mount. Runs real good, rest of drive train good, brakes work, have a new clutch set to install soon. Shell was installed when new, so bed is nice. Needs more correct wheels and tires. Have a line on a set of period slot mags. Needs windshield and all of the weatherstripping and rubber. Door have a little rust in them but not bad, have a line on a better set even the same color. These are the only pic. I have with me right now. Changed out the front bumper, the white one was pretty sad. I just replace the front springs and replace the oil pan with the correct one. Truck is an original W-100 short bed, was originally a 318 four speed, now has the 400 HP big block, four speed.

Here are some pictures. Hoping for some opinions on how much you think it would be worth? The owner has not given me a number and wants me to make an offer. I feel it looks like a pretty good starting point, but it has sat for 10 years so it will also need tires, etc and also is not a factory big block truck. Any input is greatly appreciated!

It's very difficult to say what something is worth. They all vary so much it seems. If it's something you really want and have been waiting for for some time, you're gonna probably pay more. Looks pretty decent in pic but sitting so long would bother me some. Guy could want anything from $2000 to much more. Sorry I'm not more help. Very hard to get a good deal anymore it seems

Like me, You're in Michigan.

Looks pretty clean compared to most of what is here. I don't consider "soft" floor pans a big deal, almost any dodge truck prior to 94 will have soft floor pans....

Same with weatherstripping/seals they're all at least 45 years old.

I paid $1500 for a'63 D-100 short bed with worse floors, titled to frame (no tag in cab) and "lot drove" (bad fuel tank), but it cost me almost another 1000 to get it to Michigan.

Depending on location, I would consider 2500 a good starting price, as it looks like you could drive it home... Especially if you can get the spares.

If the old bumper is available and is just a little twisted, not rusted, I might be interested in it.

Good luck anyway!!!

Thanks for the replies. I had mentioned a number a good bit north of 2k and he wasn't interested. Ah well, the hunt continues! (And lets face it, the hunt is part of the fun!)

this looks like a really cool well cared for vintage truck

the original paint and the super cool kamper top adds a lot of interest for me

4x4 and short bed are really nice qualities that are definitely less common to find and together (you know how long you've been searching !)

the engine swap is less important to me, but a nice bonus is done cleanly
but sounds like a motor a lot of people would want

do you have any idea what he might want ? any contact info ?

He never gave me a number, just told me to "make him an offer he couldn't refuse". Apparently for what my offer was, he is more interested in keeping it. Really seemed that he wasn't very interested in parting with it.

It really depends on what you want in the end. For me the paint, body condition, engine, trans and shortbed are really strong features. It will need some money put into it but the basics are strong.
If you really want a swb, like the big block and 4 speed and appreciate the body condition I wouldn't feel like a sucker for offering $4k.
You can find a junker SWB with a small block and a rusty body, spend $2k buying it and you'd be in much worse shape than just paying double for this one to start with.

Thanks Runcharger, it really seemed that he didn't want to part with it.

Oh well, the hunt continues!

I don't know exactly what you are looking for. The VIN is a 64 W100.

Go get this one, and drive it back to Michigan. Sounds like a good roadkill style trip...

I don't know if I could get THAT much time off of work!

Looks pretty solid, although the rear diff cover is questionable.

Really hunting for a 69-71. It's amazing what people want for complete junk. I think everyone with a 40+ year old truck has been watching too much Barrett Jackson and Meecum lately... :pale

Thanks for thinking of me!

I had a surprising moment recently. I was perusing Craigslist and saw a vehicle advertised that I had seen on eBay. Out of curiosity I looked at the ad and noticed it was offered by a dealer. I viewed the dealer’s site and was astonished to see that even the most basic old Chrysler product was listed at no less than $10,000.00 more than anything else the dealer had.

Being that the 69-71 W100 that I will (hopefully eventually) pickup will just be a toy to work on/drive on the weekends, I just can't justify (nor am I able to) spend a small fortune on something that won't be a DD.

Hopefully this craziness plateaus soon. It used to be that if you wanted a cheap/fun project vehicle you could look at old trucks. Nothing good lasts forever I guess.
