1963 Sweptline D200
1963 Sweptline D200
I just picked up a barn find 1963 D200 Sweptline with 49K original miles, last registered in 1994. Straight body with some cab floor rust, I have the replacement driver and passenger floor sections. All I need now is a new windshield, and rubber moldings and new bench seat covers and it will be my dailey driver for a few months until I find another project. The truck has a 318 V8 with a 2 bbl carb, compound low 4 speed with a dana rear end. I'm not a fan of manual transmissions and would like to swap it to an automatic transmission. Anyone have any suggestion on a transmission swap other than the 727. The 727 is a good transmission but my preference would be a 4 or 5 speed OD transmission. My other option would be to do a complete engine and trans swap with my Mopar Magnum 360/380 hp crate motor with an A500 Automatic Transmission assembly from another project. The magnum engine and trans have never been fired up. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

So u really think that in 30 yrs (63-94) the truck was only driven an avg of 1600 miles/yr, which is 130 mi/mo, or 4 mi/day?
Its possible, but would need to see pedals and other wear points to verify.
For what's involved in the auto swap, use the search function. That subject has been discussed ad nauseum.

Wow, that would be some low miles for sure. My 68 has 63,420 original miles, gas and brake pedals look new still and thanks to being in the family since brand new, I am fortunate to know the exact history of my truck.
Would like to hear the history of this truck and see some pics. Good find!!!

Of course, its your truck.... but I'd at least give thought to just enjoying it in
its original configuration. The NP420s/NP435s are great transmissions.
Part of the coolness of these is running through the gears in the top loader.
As Terry mentioned above.... the manual to auto tranny topic is popular on this
site. The "search" tool at the upper right corner will get you pointed in the proper
direction.

A lot has to do with what your plans are as far as use, what kind of gearing in the rear?depharrsr wrote:I just picked up a barn find 1963 D200 Sweptline with 49K original miles, last registered in 1994. Putting a 727 or an AOD is pretty straight forward in a D Series. Remove the bell housing, cut out the bell cross member and reinforce the frame or put a set of 69-71 spring hangers on or put a spreader bar in place of the old cross member, find a D Series 727 transmission cross member and have the drive shaft shortened. The only other item would be the shifter and tranny cooler.

What do you need that for with an autoPwrWgnDrvr wrote:Where's the parking brake in 63?
Ya, forgot about the early ones with e-brake on the driveshaft. That would require some, backing plates, hardware and cables.
When did they go to rear wheel?

Probably at these serial numbers, which would be 1965. You could dig around in the parts book to see if there is other evidence to support or refute this.swptln wrote:When did they go to rear wheel?
