I use cardboard to protect my work surfaces and soak up fluid. The other day I went looking for some at the local gas station and found several unopened boxes of display signs, advertisements like Coke, Pepsi, cigarettes. Each box had 6 24" heating and air zip ties and four 6", score those things aren't cheap. These signs are great for working with small components like control valves or carburetors. They're white so seeing small parts isn't an issue and they clean easily. The signs aren't cardboard they're corrugated plastic, very durable. I've cleaned them with lacquer thinner, mineral spirits and carb cleaner none of witch effected them. Granted they don't soak up fluid but they are pretty handy.
