Honeymoon ideas....

Post by facechicken »

So I am getting married at the end of August 2015 (her and I have both been married before, so its no huge wedding or anything fancy) We are doing a 7 day road trip to Lake Lure, NC and back. Leaving August 31st and back home on the 6th of September. From Hiawatha, Ks to St. Louis the first night, then to Knoxville, TN then to Lake Lure to stay at the Inn for 2 days (we are going to take the mountain road in from the south from Forrest City) , then to Nashville, TN then to Tulsa, Ok (Hard Rock Casino....been there a bunch of times, we both love it although she doesnt know this is the last stop yet :Thumbsup ) then back home.

My question to you guys....what to do along the way and at every stop. I have been to Lake Lure, done the Gateway Arch in St Louis (although she hasn't), done everything from home to Tulsa...what are some neat 1-2 hour things to do in the towns along the route? Some hidden gem of a resteraunt? Some amazing scenery? Good winery/brewery/bars?

Not sure what your choice of music is, but I bought a new car recently, and of course it comes with a free 6 month subscripition to Sirus XM satalite radio. I love not hearing comercials anymore! Anyways, I listen a lot to the Highway, country music. You mentioned a stop in Nashville, and that's where they broadcast from, Every Friday evening they do this thing called Music Row Happy Hour, It sounds like a blast to me! Just a bunch of folks, in the studio, on air, drinking beer or anything else you bring with you, and since you'll be on a honeymoon trip, they'd probably put you on air?

Like I said, not sure if you're into the oakie music, but I think it would be fun?

Congrats dude! You should really consider spending a night in a cabin at Gatlinburg. That's where me and Layla got married and spent our honeymoon. We're not really into country and it was still great. They have a nice aquarium, helicopter rides etc.

What route you taking east from STL?

Congratulations!

Are you/her Elvis fans? You should be going through Memphis on the way to Tulsa.

Sorry, I have lived in a couple of towns that you will be going through....... not a part of the country I recall enjoying traveling in.

I've been to most of those places except the stretch of Southern Illinois, between Mt. Vernon and Padukah, KY, across Arkansas from Memphis to Ft. Smith and Lake Lure itself. I don't really have any ideas since I don't make too many stops between destinations but I do have opinions on some of the places.

There is an area of Arkansas that I want to see near Hot Springs and Lake Ouachita. From pictures it looks nice.

I thought Nashville and Knoxville were pretty nice but again no suggestions on what to see.

I thought Asheville was kind of tourist-trap-like and gasoline is much more expensive than in Tennessee.

Memphis has its good and bad areas. I ended up in some of the bad areas of town and couldn't wait to get out of there. You could see Graceland.

The mountains between Ft. Smith, AR. and Southern, MO. are scenic, especially the area from Ft. Smith to just south of Fayetteville. There is a highway tunnel through the mountain side. This is probably out of your way if you are going to Tulsa.

There is a old car salvage yard south of Muskogee, OK on Oktaha Rd. It was pouring rain when I was in the area, so I skipped it.

You won't be too far from Cairo, IL. where the Ohio and Mississippi rivers meet.

Are you taking 64 across southern TN. I've been the entire length of it. Its a pretty good road with a lot of small towns but, watch out for Barney Fife. I just took 64 to Chattanooga and then up through the mountains to Asheville NC in October. Visited Biltmore and their winery. Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge will be absolutely packed in Aug/Sept. I would stay away unless ya like crowds. I work all of middle TN from the KY line to the AL line, TN river to Cookeville. I can probably suggest some places. Craig

I've been to the Biltmore a few times to tour the estate and also to see concerts in the summer time....they have big name acts outside on the lawn. The house itself is an amazing structure; huge and as beautiful as any in Newport. It is quite amazing to see how the very rich lived in the late 1800's. The house has almost 180,000 sq. ft. of floor space to give you an idea of its size. It is still owned by one of the direct descendants of the Vanderbilt's. The gardens are beautiful and go on for acres. Women usually love to visit it and would probably be a hit with your new bride.

We did the Biltmore Estate on our honeymoon 17 years ago. Very worth it! The place is gorgeous...and there is plenty to do and see. The wine tasting at the estate was real nice to do as well. Good luck and congrats!
