64 D100... what to do...
Re: 64 D100... what to do...
certain models did have a limited slip diff, what would you want the front axle to do? do you want it to be a full time, limited, locked, lockable at hubs ect..... then with that knowledge it would eliminate alot of front axles from the mix and make it alot easier finding the one you want.

Re: 64 D100... what to do...
Well, I figured out part of my plan... this weekend I will be driving to pick up another 1964 truck. Only this time it is a 3/4 ton W200. it has a y-block 318 and will run off a gas can (tank / line issues).
My problem is that I may like this one better than my existing one. So, I'm not really any better off on having a good plan, but now I will have another sweet Dodge in my driveway.... neither one drivable. :-)
I'll post pics once I get it home.

hahaha, the gas tank and fuel line issue wouldn't be too difficult to under take and drum and shoe kits for w series trucks are a little easier to come by depending on what axles are underneath. post pictures of this w200 your getting. id love to see it! ill post some pics of a dual under bed fuel tank set up i have done for my truck if that's something you'd be interested in. tanks were cheap and readily available.

That's the way it starts. Soon you'll have a yard full of trucks.Gigabitdrew wrote:Well, I figured out part of my plan... this weekend I will be driving to pick up another 1964 truck. Only this time it is a 3/4 ton W200. it has a y-block 318 and will run off a gas can (tank / line issues).

It is not a Y block 318. Sometimes they are referred to as wideblock 318s but that isn't correct either. The Poly 318 and the LA 318 have the same width block.

Re: 64 D100... what to do...
I had been looking at an old 62 Ford that had a 292 y-block... when I was told this dodge had a y-block 318 I didn't question it. I don't know the difference between the poly and LA motors. Easy once you get to the EFI magnums, with the feul injected ports. But if I see a carb sitting on top then I just know older than magnum. How can I tell? Probably the original engine.soopernaut wrote:That's the way it starts. Soon you'll have a yard full of trucks.

Yeah, now the question is what to do with the D100 SWB truck. It is still a sharp mean looking truck. Most suggestions are to sell it and use $$ for my W200... and that makes sense, but I don't want to.
part of me wants to put the existing 318 and manual transmission in the D100 (just because I have them) and then continue with my seach for a newer motor, transmission, and gas tank for the W200. The other part says just drive it.
And it took me a lot of convincing for my wife to be good with first truck... she likes the 2nd one better than the 1st... I am nervous about what she'll think when I have a 3rd (donor)!

You could do a "triple gainer" off that rear bumper.Gigabitdrew wrote:I hate that back bumper/landing strip... it will go first.

No such critter as a "Y-block" or "big block" 318. It is a Poly head 318, or otherwise known as an "A" engine. The 273, 340, 360 and 1967 - 1993 318 are "LA" engines.

Re: 64 D100... what to do...
I've been doing some reading on these semi-hemi engines... sounds like a great motor, and perfect for my truck. Swap in an electrical distributor from an LA engine and I think I'll be happy.66patrick wrote:No such critter as a "Y-block" or "big block" 318. Doesn't look like they have as much support for parts as the LA... is it due to weight the reason folks shy away, or most like me and it is just lack of knowledge? (Which some of us still have)
I still am thinking about swapping out the transmission for an automatic... thoughts?

Re: 64 D100... what to do...
I've got it home. The back passenger wheel is locked. I need to make sure the engine is not seized, but I have only attempted to spin the fan. The fan did spin, but the belt did not... so neither did the engine.
Well, it is home... now to get a new plan.

Re: 64 D100... what to do...
Yep, it turns! Even looks like there are some newer parts on there. Main issue seems to be trash in tank and fuel line. I may try to get it to fire up tomorrow.Jake66 wrote:Get a breaker bar and socket that will fit and crank it over easiest way to tell

First thing to do is a compression test. Easy and very informative.
