Download Service Manual???

Post by Fr3dBull »

I know the Ram and Honda forum I use for my other cars have a 'Technical' section where you can download the service manuals for free. From my understanding it is completely legal as long it is for members only, because of peer to peer copyright laws. Considering most the manuals for purchase I can find online are in CD form, I was wondering if there is anywhere i can download it, or someone who would like to post it on the forum.

Thanks,
Fred

As far as I can find downloading copyrighted material for free is illegal. Unless somehow those forums purchased an unlimited license which I doubt. Just buy the CD.

I'm almost positive it is Legal for forums because it is peer-to -peer... Either way, ill just buy the CD and post it once I get it.

Peer to peer is just a method to share files. Some of the original P2P companies like napster were shut down due to major copyright infringement and restarted as pay services. Distributing copyrighted material is always illegal by any method unless it is the original source like you hand someone you original paid for DVD not a copy of it.

So i just shuffled through legal documents online. From my understanding is that as long as the content remains withing the confines of the forum, it is permitted. AKA, members only access.

We can argue this to everyone is blue in the face. Here is my basic arguments.
-But most other forums have it, I know because i have a 97' dodge ram and almost every Honda manual in PDF from various forums.
-The legality is a gray area, but 'they' say as long as it is members only it is legit
- Even if they went after the forum, would dodge really care to lawyer up over a 50+ year old document?
- At the end of the day it would be up to the forum moderators to allow it or not. I'm sure the forum has some sort of legal advice they can get.

No sense in everyone being 'nay sayers' and shooting down something that would help lots of people on the forum.

Dodge may not bother, but Bisko might, since they have a license to reprint and sell the old manuals.
Go here and buy a better than original reprint:

Does the original factory service manuals have a copywrite? The parts books do not appear to have any.

Just for giggles I looked at the many service manuals I have.I do not see a copyright.
Not that I care if any get posted as I have original print copies for my vehicles.

For works produced between January 1, 1923 and March 1, 1989, a copyright notice is required otherwise it is public domain.

This topic started with the OP's position that COPYRIGHTED material may be reproduced on the forum.
The fact that the FSM's do not appear to copyrighted DOES NOT negate the original discussion regarding material that is in fact copyrighted.
As John (the moderator) stated, don't do it.

Perhaps the OP was assuming that the original service manuals for Sweptline era trucks were copyrighted. I'm sure he is more interested in whether the Sweptline manuals can be downloaded, as opposed to whether copyrighted material can be downloaded.

Just because material is copyrighted doesn't mean it can't be recreated under fair use laws.

I find section (B) to be interesting in this case. From my interpretation a procedure, such as steps in a repair manual, cannot be copyrighted.

A site that contains a service manual could also be creating an archive.

this forum is not P2P and if there is even a hint that a scanned manual posted on here that belonged to Bishko then either John or I will remove it.

I know this is an old thread, but are there any pdf manuals I can buy? I see the cds but I am hoping to avoid the mail and just pay to download a copy that I can print right now.

Yes, I'm around  Although, mine is not a Factory Service Manual, but more of a "guide" sorta. It's also a download rather than a CD. This digital download has allot of information on it pertaining to the Dodge Sweptline Trucks. It has over 800 pictures of "How I did my restoration". These include photos of rust repair, body work, welding panels, etc. It is for all Sweptline enthusiasts. If your truck is restored, a beater, or a project in progress, then you may want to consider this option.

OK, there is my "sales pitch". Good luck in your project! :salut
