Dilemma
The wife and I are seriously thinking about down sizing. Moving to the country, somewhere off the not beaten path.
Here is the Dilemma. the way my swepty is currently set up is for hard top use. I will need a 4x4 where we will be moving.
Do I convert my truck to 4x4 with parts from a parts truck (yet to be located) or sell/trade for a swepty 4x4 ?
the only thing that bothers me with converting is the transfer case. as my drive train is solid i really hate to separate it.
Thought, suggestions. Comments
Thanks

Re: Dilemma
I'll trade you on that Dana 44 disc brake axle I have, ready to install! I'd say go for it, both of your trucks are pretty modified now, so converting one to a Power Wagon would be a natural progression, somehow. Find an eight-lug 4.10 rear axle assembly, and you have the axle situation taken care of.

Re: Dilemma
IMO it's really quite easy to convert these trucks since they already have a compatible suspension. Front axle is a bolt in for the most part. I'd convert to cross over steering which isn't too hard.
Easiest thing to do is go with a divorced transfercase. You won't have to fool with your engine/trans at all. Just fabricate a way to bolt in a t-case crossmember and three new driveshafts. If you can get a complete 4x4 parts truck with a divorced case it wouldn't be to hard at all. Just depends on your skill level and how much time you have to work on it.

Re: Dilemma
Would you really need 4wd as much as you think you would? Could you get by with higher clearance and a rear locker?

Re: Dilemma
4X4 Will be a must. the land is about 5 miles off any county maintained road and it will be old geological and survey roads. Dry, lifted might work. but even with 33" tires the straight axle would sit lower than a actual drive axle. Wet would be a no go. I took pictures of some the road, I will post later.
Thanks for the thoughts and advise,

Re: Dilemma
Or..... Perhaps you could find a decent later model used 4x4 and keep your
Sweptlines as they are..... seeing as how a conversion will cost some $$
to do. Ask me how I know.... I'm just about finished rounding up
parts for my upcoming D200 to W200 conversion and have some decent coin
invested already. This is before I've put my money down on any maintenance
parts for my tranny, t-case, front axle & drive shafts..... Gasket$, seal$, bearing$,
brake component$ and u-joint$ add up quickly, as we're all aware.....
Just a thought....

Re: Dilemma
Has to be mechanically sound as mine if i am doing any kinda trading. Has to be drivable no matter what. I don't mind a little rust as i can do floor pans but not into rockers or firewall repair. pretty isn't important. reliability is. as long as it will do 55 mph i can travel with that. as most of the driving will be off road, and will be 10 mph max.Yellow71 wrote:Powerwagon

Roxy, ive done the 3 inch front and 2 in rear suspension lift. even with a 31 inch tire the axle sits to low im afraid.

there is the kinda road i will be going down,
here is the type of geological road im talking about, yes there is a road there.
The ridge on the right where it slopes to the left is about where the property is.
east of the latimer co line about midway up there is a well site. that where the pictures were taken from
