Oh My Goodness - What Have I Done?

Post by MitziDupree »

I bought a truck!

I know absolutely nothing. But I love the uniqueness of the Sweptline. There are about 80 gazillion Fords/Chevy's around here of the same era - it's fun to be different!

I got a 1968 D-100 Longbed, about 90K on what I believe is the original 318 engine. It has a 1 barrel carb - um...is that normal? Is that something to immediately change? Truck drives awesome - tons of power - will really knock your head back. Body's pretty good - some little dings here and there, should be easy to fix. It needs a paint job, but who knows when I can afford that.....

Rocker panels are pretty much gone, but that's the only major rust issue. Dash is in good shape, but the rest of the cab is pretty mediocre.

Do I need to buy the restoration CD that's listed on this site? Someone recommended that I get the replacement rocker panels at Certi-Fit - any thoughts on this?

I have a little ranch, so this is going to be a "truck truck." It will earn it's keep, but nothing says it can't look great while doing so. Any suggestions or advice is appreciated!

Jim's CD is probably the best money I've spent on Blue. Worth more money than he asks for it.
http://www.vintagepowerwagons.com/ also has parts for our trucks.

First Congrats and welcome to the site!!! You won't find a more friendly and humorous place to be!!! First off your purchase is excellent. I'm very pleased with you. I'm surprised that the carb is 1 bbl, they are usually 2. I think, I've got a '66 so mines a bit different. Anyhow, I was gonna tell you an inexpensive but time consuming way to paint the truck, but it CAN look great if it is done right. Roll-on rustoleum, or some other type rust fighting paint. There are those of us on this site that have tried it, me included, and I'll tell you what, if you do it right it works out great. I messed up on my first try, but try try again!!! Anyway, any questions you have bring them up and most of the time they can be answered. Welcome again

Oh yeah, put that old truck in the registry

Welcome to the site, and congratulations on getting the Dodge. Sounds like you have a smart 15 year old daughter. She knows a cool truck when she sees it. I second the advice that you already have received, buy Jim's restoration CD and check out Vintage Power Wagons for the replacement door steps. I am not familiar with Certi-fit so I can't say about them. About that carb, if the truck is a V8 it will have a two barrel carb, although there is only one hole at the top. It splits into two smaller holes, or barrels, inside the carb. If it were a six cylinder it would have a one barrel carb. Post some pictures of the truck. We love pics on this site.

Gentlemen - thanks so much for the warm welcome.

I'm looking forward to this project and your advice has already been helpful.

Not too many girls around here, but I'm used to that. Most women would think me crazy for wanting to spend my weekend de-oxidizing 40 y/o red paint and ending up looking like an Oompa Loompa. They probably don't enjoy terrifying people with engine braking, either. Pfft.

Here's a pic - "before", mind you. Perhaps in five years I'll have an "after."

It's not chromed but I wish it was. It's a NOS aluminum grill.

kman -

Yep - I'm up in the tri-town area North of Denver. And yes, the truck was on Craigslist.

FYI - there's a salvage yard in Keensburg that has a couple of swepties in the yard. They were closed when I got there (Saturday, mid-day, I mean who'd want to go scrounge through a salvage yard on Saturday, right?), but I was able to see them pretty good through the fence - they're in decent shape. Trouble will just be getting back up there during their Princess Working Hours.

I posted on the parts wanted forum - I'm looking for the white trim strip for the bed (long) as well as some side mirrors, if anyone has any recommendations...

I'll third (maybe fourth or fifth) the recommendation to get Jim's CD.

It's the best $20 I have ever spent on my truck.

I ordered it - Jim sent me an e-mail saying he was dropping it in the mail yesterday.

That means by Monday, I should have just enough knowledge to make me extremely dangerous.

Beware, kids.
