Scott... I guess it is my age...

OK... being over the age of "50" I just can't grasp the point of "Facebook" and Twitter? Don't worry... I feel the same about "Texting". Why not just call 'em on the phone? why go to all that bother of punching the keyboard to say... "what 'cha doing"? :thinking

Sorry... I don't have a FB or Twitter or any similar account and probably never will. I just don't "get it"; what's the point?. (I am not saying I hate it) :salut

Yeah, and I know guys out there in their 20's are saying; "You're too old to understand". Look out! this age creeps up on everyone! Actually... it doesn't creep up... it RUNS UP... VERY QUICKLY!

Conversely speaking..... some [not all] of the younger
folks might just be too young to understand why some
[not all] older folks feel the way they do about FB, Twitter
or Texting. I guess it goes both ways....

I'm 47 and don't own a personal cell phone. I do not do
FB. I did send ONE text message on my company phone.
As I recall, my text said.... "WRONG PARTY" and it
probably took me 15 minutes to key it in.

As for Twitter...... Aw C'mon!..... Really?? :bs

I knew the grief would come after posting this.

I mainly signed up to keep track of my immediate family across the states and abroad. We never get to see each other hardly at all and being able to keep up with pictures and such on facebook makes it really nice. I've already deleted my account once to clear out all the idiots i added from back in high school. They started cluttering up my wall with crap and i didn't like that so i started over. Now I'm very selective of who i add.

I text all day long, so much easier when you want a quick simple answer without all the small talk. Get your answer and back to work.

I destroyed my blackberry awhile back and had to wait to get a new smart phone for months! I finally picked up the Samsung Fascinate and I'm so glad i waited. Love the phone.

I know all of this stuff sounds really silly to some but it' really is a great way to keep up with family and friends you hardly ever (and never) get to see.

There are several forums devoted to sweptlines which also include a pm function, so what the hell is the point of cluttering up your personal facebook site with sweptline owner "friends"?
Just cuz someone owns a swept, does that automatically make them your "friend"?
The term "friend" is way overused and overrated as well as desecrated.

Given their security issues I wouldn't even think about it. :pale
Do the math you 'friend' somebody.............& all their friends and all THEIR friends -friends, etc and pretty soon a few million people's "FRIENDS" are involved. :shame
If you can't, or don't want to do the math have at it.
Ghost cookies and other malware, spyware, etc are enough for me and my various virus protections and firewalls to worry about. :2cents

LOL Sorry this one was funny. You need to read up on how it works. Spyware etc.. yea you can get that from any site you visit. The fried stuff you mentioned is not how that works unless you want it to. But i understand your reservations.

Yeah........REAL FUNNY
Like the other day when the Twitter worm started spamming people with porn and porn sites and trying to steal names/ passwords, etc :study .
And the NEAT 'places' feature on facebook and other sites so your 'friends' will know where you are and OTHER people will go and burgle your house. :banghead :banghead
And what was it about a month ago the facebook had the worm issues.

YOU'RE RIGHT, I do have some severe reservations. :thinking

I have read enough about the problems these sites have had and the POTENTIAL they have for major issues to know that these things are NOT for me!

So how is it any different than posting on a message board at Sweptline.org or anywhere else? I'm not on facebook but I don't really see it being much different than here. I don't really even know what Twitter is other than something popular on the internet. I always bring up the free marketing aspect of social networking sites, if you have a business or you are in the performing arts, etc. it is free advertising. I've thought about creating a facebook account to post my music on but not really use for any other purpose. The other thing I always bring up is having a private profile on a social networking site. If it is really about social networking then you would want people, that you don't know, and aren't your friends to see it. :thinking

HAHA! That's because some people are stupid enough to publicize everytime they take a dump and "tweet" about it. I personally don't use it often, but my wife recently set up a family account so we can share family photos and stuff. :Thumbsup

I once used facebook. I used an alias name & a secondary email address. I was doing an adoption search for my biological family. Once I found them, I deactivated the FB account. I could see where its neat, but I barely have time as it is.

I have a residence which nobody visits. I have a mailbox which no one writes to. I have a phone which they don't call. Why the hell do I need another method to be ignored.

Eventually FB users get their email contact lists hacked, then here come the viagra spam.

Please don't take my post as a slam. PLEASE, wasn't trying to do that.

I was trying to express that all the stuff you mentioned can happen anywhere, even on say the Home Depot website site. It all comes down to hackers and the back-end firewalls, etc..

Then comes the robbing of houses.. Yea when you post on facebook or twitter saying "Family is heading off to Vacation for two weeks WOOHOO". Takes a little Google searching to narrow down your location... That's not facebook's fault, it's the idiot at the keyboard.

If you have reservation about doing it then don't, it's not for everyone and i respect and understand that. I was just trying to tell the guys that have tried to contact me on facebook to please let me know your forum name so i know who is asking.

I agree with you totally Scott! I'm 43 and texting is quick and easy! On the noisy drilling rigs we can communicate while still working around the diesel engines.

As for FB, the first day I logged on with my girl friend looking over my shoulder I said " Oh I went out with that girl in high school..... :censored ..... that was my last day visiting FB :salut

The trick is to learn how to use the privacy controls, set them to your comfort level, 'friend' as many folks as you care to, and then hide almost everyone (or anyone [like me, for example] who particularly annoys you). That way you don't have to endure the minutiae of dozens or hundreds of people's lives, but you can still keep up with the closest of your family and friends, and communicate with the others as you need or want to, either publicly on their wall, or privately, through the message function (better than e-mail). For my money, (it's free), it seems to have shaped up as the best all in one (basic info, photos, videos, miscellaneous BS) format for establishing and maintaining a web presence.
