Re: Converting front End to IFS

I shortened a 78 crew cab frame for my short stepside. That way you end up with all Dodge truck stuff and the rear suspension is better too.

Re: rear axle housing colour

Any housing I've seen was painted black from the factory along with the brake drums. The paint burned off the drums after a few hard stops. No high temp paint back then.

Re: Cleaning axle tubes on Dana 60

That bearing wouldn't last very long at all. I'd change all the bearings when one looks like that. Probably run low on oil at one time. I used a set from Yukon Gear. They seem to have quality US made stuff.

It won't be a Magnum in a motorhome.

I'm in the process of doing that swap. Check out my thread.

Re: D200 383 header choices?

You might find that under hood temperatures get really high with long tube headers. I'm going with stainless shortys on my 440.

Re: Old gas

Syphon it out and use it for fire starter! Modern stale gas will gum up the carburetor.

Re: floor pan replacement

When you're taking off the front clip there's one bolt on each fender that you get at under the dash through the kick panels.

Re: Chassis colour?

One I had in 1967 had a black frame. The paint mustn't have been very durable though.

Re: Another IFS thread... Please forgive me!

Get a post 72 club cab frame and shorten it just ahead of the rear hump so you can lower the rear part of the frame at the same time. The cab mounts are just a matter of drilling some holes and bolting them on. Check out this thread and I'll be shortening mine shortly. http://www.sweptline.org/forum...

Re: Reminiscing and musings

The 9.25 looks like Dana was involved in the design. A lot of sites have Spicer part numbers listed for the parts. I'm not positive either way. I torched the crossmembers out of the 67 frame to do a side by side comparison with the 78. With the horizontal parts behind the cab lined up the rad suppor...

Re: Reminiscing and musings

I guess I lucked out on that rear end since the posi unit I have is the one that fits it! It's a 2.76:1 ratio but a warmed over 440 with a high stall converter will handle it OK with 15" rubber. I was comparing those two frames again and where the cab mounts will go both frames are level. The 78 has...

Re: 1963 Fargo engine swap

I always thought a good motor for one of these would be a 360 with the old poly heads and manifolds. One time we went the other way and put 273 heads on a 313. Everything bolts on but you have to change the camshaft too. The intake and exhaust valves aren't in the same order.

Re: Reminiscing and musings

I just looked it up and it's a Dana Spicer 9.25" Chrysler rear end. I assumed it was a Dana 60 but there are differences I see.

Re: Reminiscing and musings

The top pic is the 67 frame and the bottom is the 78. You can see how Dodge cured the wheel hop problem. Instead of the rear end being centred on the springs they put it a few inches to the front of centre and made the front of the spring leaves go up to the spring mount. That stops the springs from...
