Re: Spacious and comfortable wheel wells.

Got my new brake lines run, with new hoses too. Now I've got fresh lines from the Master Cylinder to the Wheel Cylinders (also new) when I put everything back together. I had a roll of coated steel hanging around that I got for free from a buddy of mine, but bending and flaring it made me regret my ...

Re: Solid vs. Flex lines

expensive but maybe only relatively.. $30 will get you a roll enough to do one entire truck, and the lines will never rot out like the ones you are replacing and the fun factor of doing the job with material that bends and flares so much easier than steel is x10 !! Very true. Much easier to work wi...

Re: (Another) kingpin question

Noeli84: your post is exactly what I was about to post and I am at the exact same point you are with the same (2200 lb) axle with the pins. I actually removed the beam with the spindles still on to make it easier to work with, plus I want to blast and paint everything once I get it apart. Can you t...

Re: Spacious and comfortable wheel wells.

That is a big sledge hammer, I didn't know they were needed on Dodges  ....Yeah. Only on the driver's side, apparently. Passenger side took just a few light taps with a regular hammer. Kingpin Saga: http://www.sweptline.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=39864 That's quite a thick looking s...

Re: Solid vs. Flex lines

Isn't copper unsafe for brake lines? Too soft and easily damaged, cracked, etc? Probably straight copper would be. Copper-nickel lines are being used (legally) all over the rust belt now for brake and fuel lines because they won't rust, ever. The coated lines eventually give up and rust, but the Co...

Spacious and comfortable wheel wells.

Pulling everything off the axle really makes you realize how roomy those old wheel wells are. https://www.tacomaworld.com/media/20160627_191912.524149/full?d=1467117821 Of course, silly me said "You know, while I'm under here doing the new kingpins I might as well replace those rusty old brake lines...

Center link castellated nut

I don't suppose anybody knows the size and thread pitch of the castellated nuts on the center link (pitman arm to spindle arm) on our trucks? I need to pick a new one up at the parts store after work today and I left the old one sitting on the kitchen counter this morning when I left the house ...

Re: Solid vs. Flex lines

Another option too is to swap the steel out with copper-nickel; it's softer and is much easier to work into a bubble flare. :2cents

Re: (Another) kingpin question

Heat is the secret for most frozen in place stuff, if it doesn't destroy adjacent structures. Acetylene is best, propane isn't usually hot enough, cherry red is the goal. Glad u finally got em out! I had it hot enough last weekend that the grease in the kingpin itself was smoking, and she didn't wa...

Re: (Another) kingpin question

Finally managed to get the retaining pins out this weekend. The driver's side was the one that was killing me; I finally ended up making my own penetrating cocktail out of a 50/50 split of acetone and ATF and letting them soak all week, and then yesterday afternoon going to pound town on them with a...

Re: (Another) kingpin question

If its tapered, one end should be larger. Beat on the small end. The bevel is tapered. Unfortunately the pin appears to be the same diameter all the way down its length, and I can't tell from looking at the ends which side has the narrower bevel. Guess I'll just have to keep changing directions unt...

Re: (Another) kingpin question

Alright, so I got a new kingpin set for the 2200lb axle in the mail today. The retaining pins have a definite bevel on the side that mates up to the king pin itself, and it's a tapered bevel, to be driven in one direction to tighten things up and in the other to back it out. So now the question beco...

Re: (Another) kingpin question

I soaked mine with penetrate oil and used an air hammer they came right out. Are you sure the axle isn't a 3800lb? I thought that was the only one with the pin instead of the bolt. I just did mine rock auto had the moog kit with the bearing No, definitely not a 3800lb. Mine's got the single cup axl...

(Another) kingpin question

So the door tag on my truck says "2500" front axle, but I'm trying to get my old kingpins out and I'll be darned if there isn't a retaining pin instead of a bolt in there underneath all that old grease. :joker I've got the 2500lb kit on hand but I can just return it if I've got the 2200lb unit. Now,...

Re: Photos of your truck being a truck

Did some recreational work this weekend. FB_IMG_1464703379468.jpg I also got pulled over for speeding :pale but I said that the speedometer wasn't as accurate as it used to be, so I mostly paced traffic (blatant lies, haha!). But he was a younger guy, probably mid-twenties and when he came back from...

Ahhh..... one of the thousands of uses for the common paper clip... :clap :clap Is this the first time around for the odometer ? John As near as I can tell, yes. The numbers all lined up correctly/evenly before, and they are now offset/staggered. But, that doesn't mean that the instrument cluster i...

Re: Our 500,000 mile wagon called Morgan

Nice! I love seeing old units like that used as DD's. I use the '69 as mine during the summer, when there's no salt on the roads.

So what's it got under the hood?

Re: All that is old will be new again

Nice. I was bummed that I couldn't get it as it rolled, but I was on the highway when it happened, and there was no way I was going to pull over on I-95. So I just kept going and snapped a picture when I stopped at the end of the offramp. I thought about just taking a picture as it happened, but the...
