Re: Progress!
Heads are off and i'm using the centerline method with a piston stop to verify tdc. So far 2 degrees retarded w the crank gear keys is the closest ive got to the card. I'm at 102 icl, cam card calls for 103 and so that makes me 5 degrees advanced. My intake opening at .050 is one degree later than m...

Re: Progress!
Well i ran into trouble degreeing the cam lsa says 107 and a recommended icl of 103. The best i can get it to so far is 100. I'd think that 7 degrees advanced is way too much so far im at a loss. The intake opening is almost dead on but closing seems to be within two degrees or so. I'll stumped... m...

Progress!
I've finally took the plunge and I'm working on getting the cam in my 440. I'll be switching from the 213 heads to a set of closed chamber 516's to help with the compression. Heads are done using milodon valves, 2.08 intake 1.81 exhaust. I'm working on degreeing the cam does anyone have any helpful ...

break in oil
I've always ran rotella 10w40 in the 440. I'll be installing my new cam and heads this weekend i hope. Is this oil along with the Howards zppd addative enough for proper break in?

Re: flat cam...
I should have done a compressio test! I'm having a local shop redo a set of 516 heads for me to help with the dismal compression ratio. Hopefully the smaller chambers wil help a bit.

Re: flat cam...
Hopefully after the holiday my heads will be done and ill put in the cam get it degreed and have it dialed in and running again. I've heard a lot of people say the 516 heads are junk but I've made the decision to do the swap using a set of 2.08 and 1.81 valves. I'm thinking a bit more compression co...

Re: flat cam...
pushrods seem straight eyeballing them.. and theres a lil wear on the rockers nothing unusual id guess for a 55,000 mile motor. There was a little side to side play not sure how much is normal really but nothing extreme, though i did notice the timing chain was pretty beefy double roller maybe? The ...

Re: flat cam...
I pulled the cam... no flat lobes...some had more wear than others... no collapsed lifter either so im left scratching my head. I don't think the stock valves have any shims under the springs. Are shims mandatory to protect the head from the springs? I'd hate to pull the heads but i could get a set ...

flat cam...
Well can anybody here describe what sound a cam that just ate a lobe would make. Either I've got a bad lobe :banghead or I suppose I could maybe have a bad lifter. I would guess that a lobe would be more likely as it definitely has a ticking sound that increases and decreases with engine speed. Happ...

Re: Bets anyone?
I'm greatful for the help! After planning the rpm i need to cruise at with the convertere I'll be using id need at least a 3.23 gear w a 26" tire. So chances are even if i find an 8 3/4 from a c body i'd still need to buy gears.

Re: Bets anyone?
Thanks guys. I think I've located an 8 3/4 from a 66 c body and possibly one from a 71 so things are looking up afterall! Now I'll just have to bite the bullet and go after some aftermarket gears!
