Changed timing chain, now makes 20" of vacuum instead of 10". Engine still surges at cruise but now idles well and starts quickly. Need to dial in this BDD carb or find a 2bbl substitute; i dont want to change the intake manifold.

THanks for the info. PCV is the only smog item on this truck. As a result the inside of the engine is pristine! My next question: is the Carter BBD a decent carb to live with. i want simplicity and economy. Bone stock is nice when yer at the parts counter...

Valley Pan with large corroded holes. Also new pan with blanked heat riser ports

We found the valley pan had numerous and large corroded holes in it which through off the calibration of the PCV system. The carb then responded to mixture adjustments. Timing chain is next.

Replaced holey valley pan, BIG improvement but not completely right. Everything points to T Chain. Will replace this weekend. Will follow up including pix of bad V Pan.

Do you have a link for the video you are referring to? My 43-year carb man has never heard of drilling a BBD. The only videos i see show a rich condition from a high float setting.

Timing chain slop sounds feasible considering the unstable idle and cruise below 2500 rpm. Acceleration and >3000 rpm takes up the slop and it is stable. 27k miles are showing, it would make sense that it's 127k miles if it has a loose chain.
