Re: 62 D100 Barely Fires Then Dies
marsocho, Hey I had many weird issues with my w200 when i first got it years ago. I replaced the carb , and also installed a solid state ignition. Very easy to install and man the truck starts right up now and runs great. It is a Mallory ignition jc whitney # 953527 65 bucks. Worth it even if not y...

Re: 62 D100 Barely Fires Then Dies
here's a video. if you turn up the volume and listen closely, it almost dies around 3-7 seconds. catches itself and then idles roughly.

Re: 62 D100 Barely Fires Then Dies
swapped out the alternator and that seemed to do the trick -- at first. it fired up just fine, but when i drove around the block some of the same symptoms started to appear again, but to a lesser degree. made it back home and then fired it up again about an hour later. started okay and then sputtere...

Re: 62 D100 Barely Fires Then Dies
thanks musty, i'll give that a shot tonight. but the battery is new and the alternator passed a bench testing about 4 months ago (this was when i was trying to figure out the voltage regulator problem). i'm having a buddy who's more experienced in these things take a look this weekend. i'll keep you...

Re: 62 D100 Barely Fires Then Dies
thanks guys. yes, it's a points distributor. one more symptom: while idling, i turned on the lights and it started to sputter, when i then hit the high beams the engine died immediately. :banghead this is my first old vehicle. i've learned a lot in the six months since i've owned it, but i still hav...

Re: 62 D100 Barely Fires Then Dies
so now i'm thinking it's an electrical issue. started it this morning and it didn't sputter out but was idling unevenly. checked the fuel bowl while it was idling and it looked like fuel was being pumped in normally. i tested the horn and it wasn't working so i swapped out the voltage regulator (thi...

62 D100 Barely Fires Then Dies
When I fire it up I have to pump the gas pedal to keep it idling, if i try to drive it it starts shuttering and backfires. i can barely make it around the block. replaced the fuel filter but that didn't help. i still think it might be a fuel starvation issue, but the previous owner replaced the fuel...

just an update to close the loop: the switch from the mechanical to solid state voltage regulator did the trick.

Re: Vapor Lock? Roadside Assistance Welcome
thanks LC. i changed the fuel filter last night and found lotsa gunky sediment in the bowl. after i started the engine with the new filter and cleaned bowl in place, i checked for leaks and noticed that the engine had blown more gunk into the bowl. so i'm starting to think i need to flush the fuel t...

Re: Vapor Lock? Roadside Assistance Welcome
No, now I am thinking it's a bad fuel pump and/or dirty filter. i have the exact same problem as described here:

Vapor Lock? Roadside Assistance Welcome
So I'm driving in really snarled, stop and go highway traffic in some pretty hot weather (at least for the Bay Area) and my truck starts jerking back and forth, the oil light comes on for maybe 10 seconds and then I stall out completely. I take a look at the temperature gauge and its running just be...

Re: Total System Failure
bingo. talked to the mechanic and it appears to be an overcharging problem -- the voltage regulator was toast. upgraded the VR to handle higher output, so hopefully that does the trick. thanks all.digdoug wrote:Hint...check the voltage going to the voltage regulator.(black wire)

Re: Total System Failure
that's a good question. i know he did a bench test to determine that it was an alternator issue in the first place, but i'm not sure if he did one after he repaired it. lucky for me, i just remembered the work is under warranty, so i'll take it back to the shop and let you know what i find out.

Re: Total System Failure
i should have chosen my words more carefully. instead of re-wire, i should have said that he told me he fixed a lose connection in the alternator. thanks.

Total System Failure
Electrical gremlins are rearing their ugly heads again in my 62 D100. Here's the breakdown: it first started with the horn dying -- truck ran fine but the horn wouldn't work while driving (even on the highway); about a week later headlights dimmed a little while driving at night, and then a day late...
