Re: Dana 70 Front Axle

Is your D70 front axle open or closed knuckle? If closed knuckle, you have a few options: Without some fab work, I'm 99% sure sure you cannot change a closed knuckle D70 to disc brakes but double check for sure. With that said, if you really want keep the closed knuckle D70 you (may) have, you can c...

Re: Resto shop - NW Montana and moving outward

That is such a shame considering Ken Exline is out I-70, right accross the MD/PA line.
If I had the $, I'd drop my crew off to him and let it rip.

It might be worth a phone call to see how much it would be have the truck shipped to him.

Re: 68 D300 and 76 W300 axle swap questions

Chevy truck axles from '79 - '87, like the D44 (front), D60 (front), and 14 bolt (rear) are 69.5" wide, from wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface **in single rear wheel form**. Spring perch width on the front 44s and 60s is 31.5" from center pin to center pin. Dually and SRW GM 60 housin...

Re: Going to bare metal

Having used both a chemical stripper and a media blaster, I would definitely look into media blasting. Don't get me wrong, chemical stripping has it's place but it will take you a long time to get the frame prepped properly. I had my crew/lwb frame blasted a month or two ago now and it turned out aw...

Re: Axle flip pinion angle?

You'll get your base line by placing an angle finder on the trans yoke. For conversation sake, say it's -4* from horizontal (the imaginary line that runs from front to back of the truck). Then stick the angle finder on the pinion yoke. Angle it up so that's it the same angle above horizontal. In thi...

I have a 2WD Dodge D350 steering box if anyone is interested in it for a conversion. It bolts to the outside of the frame rail just like Cageman's picture.

Re: Floors

I'll admit that I've never done a crew can floor before so take my advice with a grain of salt. With that said, I'm in a similar boat; the entire floor of my '66 needs to be replaced. I plan on first having the entire thing soda blasted then will cross bracing internally. From there I hope to drill ...

Re: Any Dana 70 wheel experts?

I'd first compare the width of the D70 drums and shoes to 14 bolt parts. I don't know them off hand but pirate4x4.com/forum is a great resource. Search there for sure. Brainstorming, I would considering moving the factory flanges over to make up the difference or place a spacer between the backing p...

Re: Any Dana 70 wheel experts?

You should be able to solve both your wheel and width problems by switching to either SRW D70 or 14 bolt hubs without any problems. The wheel bearing sizes and axle shaft flange bolt patterns are the same.

Re: dana44 stearing arm

Does the factory steering box have stops built into it? If not, then the length of the your steeering arms will only impact the effort required to turn the wheel and not the overall steer angle (how far you turn right and/or left). In a perfect world, the steering box will hit its internal stops at ...
