Re: Rebuild. Maybe?

Fuel filter? It sounds like the carb fuel bowl is emptying when you get on the throttle. Slowly increasing throttle gives the system time to recover. Sounds like you ran it out of gas, sucked up all the junk in the bottom of the tank, and now it's clogging the fuel filter and restricting the fuel fl...

Re: Poly 318? Maybe!!

What year is your truck? The easiest way to tell is by the valve covers - if the bottom edge is scalloped, it's a poly; smooth, it's the later LA-318.

Re: Only 10V at starting.

Electrical theory (so maybe not real life?) says that if you have that large of a voltage drop under load, either the power source is undersized and/or the load is drawing too many amps. So, it could be a weak battery - have you tried to jump start it? Or, possibly the starter is starting to go? See...

Re: Ballast Resistors

I don't believe so. As far as I know, the whole assembly is just a single component high-power resistor. If you were to put a smaller "electronics" resistor in its place, it would smoke instantly. Most of the resistors you see on a small electronic circuit board are 1/8W or smaller. The high-power r...

Re: 318 Poly Stromberg Alternative

I rebuilt a Stromberg WW2 for my '66. Like John said, my throttle shaft was warn. The body was fine, but the shaft is pretty loose. It leaks a little at idle, but it's good enough for now. I couldn't find a machine shop around here willing to try to fix it. But $25 for a repair kit, dip the parts in...

Re: '66 Instrument Cluster questions

That's what I would have thought. However, 1) the gauge still operates, and moves as you'd expect, and 2) grandpa installed amp gauges on everything he owned that had an engine - there's no way he survived without a properly working ammeter in this truck. Is it possible that the needle deflection is...

Re: '66 Instrument Cluster questions

Thanks, all. I got it put back together, only three wires I could never figure out where they go. The gauges and indicators all work now.

So what does the ammeter bypass plate do? The ammeter still works, so..

'66 Instrument Cluster questions

So I discovered why half my instrument cluster is out - a critter's been gnawing on things up there. Apparently has a thing for the blue wires. Anyway, as I am trying to put this back together, I have some questions (pics attached for reference): 1) Strapped to the back of the speedo is a...condense...

Re: Great now it's stalling

Check the fuel filter. As you started out, you weren't getting enough fuel to keep it running under load, and by the time you got home it was completely clogged. Same thing happened to me, except I wasn't fortunate enough to make it back to my house. I guess the longer I have good fuel in it, the mo...

Re: Wheels/Rims Pic Thread Request

I just put some 35x12.5x16.5 on some old formerly black steel wheels, stock suspension. I'm glad I didn't go with 37's. And I don't think I'll be using tire chains. On a side note, I'll be looking for the exact same wheels, except 16" instead of 16.5" on account of tire availability and prices. If a...

Re: Dead fan motor?

I would think that if the motor shorted (heat=high amps) the fuse would pop. However, high resistance in the fan switch (like from corrosion or a bad solder joint) would cause the switch to heat up, and eventually fail and break the connection. So my 2 pennies are on a bad switch. Have you tried to ...

Re: brake hose help please!

I had to use Brake Best BH4751 (same as NAPA 32102) . It's about 4" longer than what every parts store lists as the correct part. Don't know why... This hose runs from the frame (the larger end with the female thread) directly to the wheel cylinder - I don't have any hard line as you described. I ha...

Re: 71 318 Fuel Pump install?

You should remove the sending unit. It is just a tube, no screen or other intake filter. If the tank had been sitting empty for any length of time in a moist environment, the intake is likely highly corroded. You could soak it in some parts cleaner, but because of the shape of the tube you'll never ...

Re: 71 318 Fuel Pump install?

Fuel pump is installed correctly and now pumps fuel from a remote container (my initial plumbing from the remote container must have been faulty - how do you mess that up?). I've blown out the lines from the pump back to the tank, and I finally got bubbles in the tank. However, still no flow in the ...

Re: 71 318 Fuel Pump install?

I'm going to bump this thread for a stupid question: should cranking the motor (with the starter) generate enough fuel pressure to fill the carb bowl? I am just barely getting a dribble out of the pump discharge, with new fuel pump, plumbed with 18" of clean hose to an open container. It was pumping...

Which carb to rebuild and air cleaner post/stud

I don't think I'm going to get satisfactory r...

Re: spindle nut socket

It turns out the 2-1/2" is too big to fit inside the hub, and I couldn't locate the correct one at the NAPA or FLAPS. So I ground the corners down on the socket, and it didn't take much to get it to fit inside the hub. Even though the 2-1/2 doesn't fit snug on the flats, it works fine, esp since you...
