You're in Elmira? I had the same problem with my '71. Bought one that was supposed to be the right one, was the wrong one. Sent it back. Learned of A-1 radiator at 5th and Lawrence in Eugene. The guy rebuilt my stock radiator. Put in new core and used the tanks of the old one. Absolutely perfect an...

I figured it out. The column is bad. The shifting rod doesn't engage the shifting inner shaft to go in to reverse or first. Luckily, the parts truck has a good column. i had a lot of problems getting mine to engage also. i had to put a nice long flat head screwdriver in there and work on it. yours ...

lol.. yeah i had to mess with it!

from your PM - are you able to pull the shifter towards you, and have it move the shift column? so that you can get it to activate first and reverse?
