I figured it out. The column is bad. The shifting rod doesn't engage the shifting inner shaft to go in to reverse or first. Luckily, the parts truck has a good column. i had a lot of problems getting mine to engage also. i had to put a nice long flat head screwdriver in there and work on it. yours ...

from your PM - are you able to pull the shifter towards you, and have it move the shift column? so that you can get it to activate first and reverse?
