Re: Surging stalling above 30mph

After a timing chain/gear replacement, another rebuilt carburetor, a new fuel line and pump, and we are off. Roadtrip started Tuesday and we are creeping though South Dakota en route to NJ via Madison>Chicago I-90>I-80. No real issues thus far. Thanks for all the help on this one. It feels great to ...

Re: Surging stalling above 30mph

Update: heli coil repair a success. Intake bolts took full torque. No more coolant in oil. Still a slight hissing sound. Engine still struggling to idle, revs just fine. Fuel pump replaced, fuel lines blown out, carburetor needle checked, float level checked (brass float replaced), new coil, reman d...

Re: Surging stalling above 30mph

Well this weekend will be round 3... Second attempt stripped out already questionable threads in the cylinder head. Was left with a vacuum leak that is only overcome on high idle. The water passage ports have lots of corrosion and pitting and I have learned this is why Fel Pro recommends a bit of rt...

Re: Surging stalling above 30mph

I have rebuilt more poly's the last 50 yrs than I can count. NEVER have I used silicone like that and NEVER have I had a leaky manifold - neither before, nor after, rebuilding. I'm not surprised that the silicone goober job failed. Seemed like a method for those with no understanding of the science...

Re: Tips on shipping an NP435 trans

Sending mine to Novak. OD? Rebuild? Both? I love the idea of OD for the NP435, but think their kit isn’t compatible with my earlier trans. But would a later trans bolt up to a poly 318? Your best bet is to ship from a business address with a loading dock as suggested above. Residential pickup will ...

Re: Carter BBS - Spring Clip on Pump Plunger

I believe the bbs has a similar plunger to the bbd. This is what I had and my kit did not include a replacement clip nor spring.

Re: Surging stalling above 30mph

So I am planning on redoing the intake manifold gasket job and am wondering what your preffered method of applying the gasket and sealants is. This attempt I layed red rtv around every opening and once tacky I layed the metal gasket that had been sprayed with copper rtv on both sides. I then only pu...

Re: Surging stalling above 30mph

So I just finished up the intake manifold gasket/carb rebuild/tune up. I feel mostly defeated. The carburetor had rusty sludge in the bottom of the bowls. I cleaned everything up and found that the float hinge pin was missing. A small piece of 2.5mm all thread from my rc parts came handy here. Engin...

Re: Surging stalling above 30mph

I got the intake gaskets replaced yesterday and am about to tear into the carburetor. That manifold was pretty darn heavy! Fingers crossed for no leaks. I ran red rtv around all the intake/exhaust and water passages, sprayed metal gaskets on both sides with copper rtv, and then put more rtv on top o...

Re: Surging stalling above 30mph

Hey guys I am getting ready for a cross country drive in my ‘64 S400 bus with a 318 poly. I wouldn't, unless I had a spare carburetor, tools, and a couple of filters. What you've got sounds to me like dirt floating in the float bowl occasionally clogging an orifice. I will be tearing into the carb ...

Re: Surging stalling above 30mph

Are you heading back toward New Jersey? moving again? best of luck with the trip. I think we can sort this new problem out. Hi Wally, you are correct. I am packing all my belongings and driving east back to NJ. Bittersweet reverse manifest destiny you could say. This forum has taught me a lot and I...

Re: Surging stalling above 30mph

I bought a rebuilt from that same outfit in canada. they do not know how to rebuild carbs. they didnt have the horseshoe strap that holds the float hinge pin in place installed. float was just bobbing around in there and engine flooding horribly. also have you checked fuel flow and fuel pressure? f...

Accelerator pump in the carb maybe?
I think this is worth checking out! Frustrating to have to open up this rebuild, but I haven’t driven it much in the two years since the carb was purchased.

Re: Surging stalling above 30mph

So after further inspection I see a puddle of oil resting on top of the waterpump and some overspray on fan and drivers side inner fender. Will a leaking intake manifold gasket cause a vacuum leak and an oil leak? Here are photos of my vacuum hoses coming off the carter bbd. Does everything look rou...

Re: Surging stalling above 30mph

Vehicle starts normally, idles fine, drives around town nicely. Once I start to push it last about 30, the engine starts to surge and eventually stops responding. You can still tell its barely running and today when the issue repeated itself, I coasted, with engine barely alive but unresponsive to d...

Re: Surging stalling above 30mph

I replaced the parts trying to eliminate the issue. There is a lot of fuel vapor coming from carburetor making me think its flooding, but also making me wonder if there is a vacuum advance issue or a vacuum leak somewhere. Its hard to check for leaks at speed. Any tips?

Surging stalling above 30mph

Hey guys I am getting ready for a cross country drive in my ‘64 S400 bus with a 318 poly. Engine has been running smooth until lately. Above 30-35 mph the engine feels like it’s about to stall. I get surging where gas pedal reacts and other times where it feels like an auto transmission slipping. Th...

Re: Headlight Switch Female Plug

I finally tracked down all the turn signal/stop and tail/parking light wiring and replaced almost all of it bypassing the firewall connectors. After cleaning up the headlight plug and using a zip tie to hold the plug snug on the headlight switch I realized the issue with no tail/park lamps was still...

Headlight Switch Female Plug

Anyone have any leads on new headlight switch plugs/connectors? This would be a 7 blade female plug that goes directly to the headlight switch. I am only able to find 9 terminal plugs including one for $100 that claims to be 7 terminal, but whose photo shows 9 terminals. Will the 9 terminal work? I’...

Re: D400 Brake bleeding process

Process is booster bleed, RR, LR, RF, LF, back to booster for final touch per the shop manual. My air inlet filter is attached directly to the frame mounted booster. One vacuum line to engine and another to reserve tank behind booster.
