Re: Porting templates.

http://www.moparts.org/Tech/Archive/bigblock.html There is a lot of good info on porting the big block heads on Moparts tech archives. Spend a bit of time reading the posts it will be well worth the effort. I wouldn't invest any time or money in a set of 516 heads, most have bad core shift problems ...

Re: Twin turbo- compression on a '70 truck 383?

I just pulled a 70' 383 apart that had been rebuilt with cheap aftermarket cast pistons, it measured right at 7.4-1. A single correctly sized turbo would wake things up but you have to be careful if you're using stock cast pistons. I just finished my bone stock 84' 318 turbo build. On my dyno it mad...

Re: 440 cam

Try a Turbo Action 10", the race unit. Use a good trans cooler and don't look back, it will work fantastic on the street. There may be cheaper convertors out there but you get what you pay for. A Turbo Action convertor will outlast your truck if you treat it halfway decent. I got a 10" unit in 1991,...

Re: 440 cam

Don't forget to upgrade the torque convertor! The cam will sound nasty but will be real 'soft' on the low end. As I stated before, a good 10" convertor will be the BIGGEST performance improvement. With that cam, a properly tuned motor, and a good convertor it will scare you the first time you nail t...

Re: 440 rebuild

With AC definately use the .528 rather than the 509. One day when I have some time,(LOL) I'd like to take a bone stock 440 and dyno it and then start changing cams, intakes, carbs. I know I always wondered and no one ever gave me the answers. Currently on my dyno I'm working on a bone stock 84' smog...

Re: 440 rebuild

The only fuel available locally then was 89.5 octane. I don't think you'd have a problem on 87 as the long duration cam bleeds off alot of cylinder pressure. True, these cams love compression but they will work as I outlined. With 440 ci, you still have low end torque but when these cams hit their p...

Re: 440 rebuild

I ran a 9.2-1 no quench motor with home ported 516's and later a set of 452's. Also ran the 509 for years and in my old truck with a set of no name 1-3/4" headers, M-1 single plane, and a carter 750cfm carb, and the Turbo Action 10", 4.56 suregrip. Ir ran a 12.20@106 in the 1/4. At 9.5-1 and a cam l...

Re: 440 build?convertor

The convertor works just like a stock piece except it will feel a little looser, your engine will rev a couple hundred rpm more on a normal takeoff from a stop. But, when you stand on the throttle make sure the front wheels are pointed straight before you get off the throttle. I've run 6200 rpm stal...

Re: 440 build?convertor

Turbo Action 10" race. I ran the 509 for years in my truck on the street and strip. I ran 4.56 gears and 29" tall slicks and tires. It stalls about 3800rpm with a decent 440, the 509 cam is just starting to 'work' then. The convertor will be the single biggest performance improvement. It also works ...

Re: 440 rebuild

Never say never about what Chrysler used assembling their motors. My original 74 440 Ramcharger with 77,000 miles on it came with a steel crank. They were good at using up parts on hand and a good number of 440's after 72-73 had steel cranks and 6-pack rods. Dave

Re: 440 build?convertor

Try a TA 10" convertor and not the 'tight' version. The 509 cam has alot of duration and with the tires you're using you'll need it. Dave

Re: 440 auto in a '68 D100

The linkages should work with minimal fuss, the 727 cases are all basically the same except for the bolt pattern to the motor. If you're really worried I believe the aftermarket sells a easy to install cable for the kickdown.Dave

Re: 440 cam

If you use the 516 heads be aware that alot of them have severe core shift and are easy to hit water when porting them. I did a set about 20 years ago, I had the machine shop install new hardened seats and they hit water on almost every one. I used Moroso ceramic engine seal to stop the water leaks,...

Re: The 383/ 400 vs 413/ 440 Sagga

I've owned and driven a 383 4spd roadrunner, 440 cars and a 68Hemi GTX 4spd car. They were all nice but the Hemi was king of horsepower. I've also had a 528 Hemi in my truck and now have a 605 Hemi in it. Except for a blower or a turbo, there is no replacement for displacement. My 605 makes 853hp an...

Re: 440 rebuild

If you are going to redo the stock heads have the machinist do a plunge cut in the throat under the valve seat, also ask him to blend it afterwards. This will do about what the MP templates would do. If your using the stock cam or even a bit warmer profile degree it in and advance it 2-4 degrees, th...

Re: 440 cam

I built a .030 over 440 for my bosses 83 clubcab about 15 years ago. The build was KB hyerutetic pistons with the quench height set at .035 from hitting the heads, (452's). Used the MP porting templates, bronze guides, stock size valves. We used the .474 lift MP hydralic cam, street dominator intake...

Re: need help with 440 problems

Take the number off the carb and buy a kit and a couple cans of carb cleaner. The carb # should be on the base of the carb on the front of the mounting tab the manifold stud runs through. Read the instructions. A couple things to look at, make SURE you replace the O-rings that seal the main wells wi...
