Re: electronic ignition
Me thinks this has fuel shortage written in big letters. (Choke, fuel pump, filter, intake screen in fuel line going into carb) That is the only thing I can think of that changes after a few cranks (sounds like the start is too lean). Sure, electronic ignition makes everything a little better. If yo...

Re: Need advise-Making a 1/2 ton Power wagon 8 lug more drivable
If my wife is driving, the power brakes will make ALL the difference, even with the stock drums because she's not going to be able to push hard enough to fully activate the manual brakes. A friend's W300 has power drums and stops just fine with crazy loads over the GVW (10,000 lbs). Sure, small drum...

Re: changing from 8 lug to 5/6 lug
Sure, 1/2 tons are fine when used within their design parameters. Yes, for ME that is a tad on the light side. Although I did towbar my W200 crew home with an 80's Ford Ranger (I nearly jacknifed at 10 mph when the heavy Dodge started to push my rear sideways while making a turn in front of a cop (D...

Re: Front Knuckle U-Joint
Cool, I just wanted to make sure everyone knew about the transfer-case thing. I would suggest that is the cause of any bucking. If you want to check u-joints, then jack up the front of the truck and turn the wheel fully to the lock-stop. Turn the wheel by hand with the hubs (if you have them) locked...

Re: changing from 8 lug to 5/6 lug
Your truck came with 8 lugs designed to carry the load for which the truck is rated. If, for some insane reason you went to 5 (dodge/ford) or worse, 6 (chevy) you would just be lowering the capacity of your truck. Why not put on passenger car tires as well? All 3/4 ton (gvw 7-8000lbs) trucks use 8 l...

Re: Front Knuckle U-Joint
I don't think everybody is on the same page here. When you turn sharp while in 4x4 the vehicle will "chirp", or "buck" and the steering wheel will pull back and forth. THIS IS NOT YOUR U-JOINTS!!! It is your locked transfercase not allowing the front and rear axles to rotate at different speeds as y...

Oh yeah, the brakes, I knew I forgot something... GET SOME POWER BRAKES! Even the old drums work pretty good with power brakes.Thoroughly inspect all of the brake system

Re: Front Knuckle U-Joint
My dakota "chirps" when I try to turn sharp in 4x4 on dry pavement... same as any vehicle with a "locked" tranfercase. Is this what you are referring to?

Re: Need advise-Making a 1/2 ton Power wagon 8 lug more drivable
When you say, "more driveable", what exactly do you mean? I find the limitations of a typical swepty are: 1. Loose steering (don't bother with a stabilizer until you have located and replaced all the worn parts). This includes spring eye bushings... 2. Low gearing - compensate with large tires or ch...

Re: "Old School" Exhaust Question....
Smitty mufflers were known as steel packs and cherry bombs as glass packs Cherry bombs and glass packs are a totally different sound. Personally, I like the cherry on a 6 cyl. Not sure about the 8, but not a big fan of the garbled "glass pack" sound.. I wonder how a mopar would sound with a "new sc...

Re: Slant Six trucks?
Personally, my 68 slant 6 with a government issue "cherry bomb" sounds better than my 78 318. I love that throaty growl that the 6 makes at mid-high rpm. A slant with an 883 would give about the best possible mileage for a swepty. Anybody know what a setup like that gets?

Don't get me wrong, I did EXACTLY the same thing when I was younger. My first rig was a Scout II. I went a lot of places, many I shouldn't have (they don't call me Rukus for nothin). Now, when I'm patching up the body damage on my Willy's left by some fool driver, I figure it's my karma... and some ...

Re: To keep or not to keep the split rims
The tiny advantage of split rims is that you can take the tire off the rim without the use of a tire-mounting machine like those used at tire shops. Of course, you DO need a few specialized tools, considerable strength, time, skill, and stupidity to do this because they might BLOW UP or COME APART e...

Re: Lifting a w200 power wagon?
I'm gonna stick my neck out here and say a Dana 44 front axle, be it closed or open knuckle, can't really handle more than 33" tires if you actually want to use it offroad. Oh sure, there are lots of folks out there with big meats on wimpy axles, but you can get on U-tube and see vids of their wheel...
