Re: School me on truck 383s.

there's also an RB 383 out there that everybody seems to forget. The good thing about the 383 is that they wind quickly but the trade-off is that the torque is lower that the 413 and 440. That having been said, a friend had a 68 W-200 crew cab with an un-rebuilt truck 383 that would boil the 37" Hum...

Re: Ford 9 inch?

I have had to replace several flanges, woodruff keys and axle shaft for spun ends. I have also seen them in junkyards with the ends twisted clear off behind the flange. A friend of mine used to build high-performance axles and he quit building the 8 3/4 because they kept coming back bowed when used ...

Re: 383/727 trans (long and short)

BTW, I have a short tail TF out of a an IH truck in which I put a 440 and a dana 20 coupledso it has the adaptor for the tailshaft housing and the dodge BIG non-slip yoke. it is rebuilt with about 40K miles and has been sitting for 8 years. and is for sale cheap, with the torque converter

Re: 383/727 trans (long and short)

Get a shaft out a a car with the slip spline on the shaft itself. that way you can use the non-slip TF. I had a shop make a 1 piece for me to get the center bearing out of a 63 imperial . It was about 6 ft long and ran fine, much smoother than the 2 piece.

Re: 4X4 conversion on a 64 d-100

Your son was right. That is how these trucks were originally built. Dana/Spicer 200, 201 or 205 transfer case and a heavy Dana 44 front in the 1/2 and some 3/4 tons, with 60's in front in the others. Stay away from the later model stuff as the tubes are thinner and bend more easily. IH 3/4 tons have...

Use a throttle cable for the linkage. Then you can point the carb any direction you'd like

Re: Ford 9 inch?

Robin I'm reinforcing what you said, "9 inch". The smaller Dana's are ok with 4 cyl.'s the dana 27 & 30 are junk with anything bigger than a 6. The AMC 30-35 is a tapered, keyed axle so they're no bueno por nada. The 44 is OK for most small block applications but a 440 with a loadflite will blow the...

Re: Lakewood to San Antonio Gas mileage 318/727

sorry, with all due respect, I am not buying the 22MPG from a gas burner in one of these trucks. The aerodynamics say otherwise. Either the odometer is reading wrong or s/he's running one of those "mystery carburetors that GM' bought because they get too good a mileage", (like GM would want their ca...

Re: Tire wobble like you've never seen....

An easy way around this is to go to the junkyard and gather up two more right side hubs and drums. That way you have ~righties~ all the way around

buy knurled. You'll be much happier than with swaged. Those things are boogers to get out when it comes time to change or service drums.

Re: Need advise-Making a 1/2 ton Power wagon 8 lug more drivable

These can easily be converted to the later power steering by just plating the side of the frame and using the parts from the later steering column from the rag joint down, hooked to a car or truck power steering pump. Power brakes are a plus too. You already have the LA 318 so that is a step up too....

I swapped out my worm-out dodge parts with the GM adjustable drag link off a 3/4 ton 4x4 truck. It was a bolt-in part and allows you to center the steering wheel without taking it off

Re: Ford 9 inch?

if you've ever cracked open a ford 9" next to a Mopar 8 3/4 you'd see the difference. They look similar outside but sure don't inside. The Ford uses monster gears with a bearing on the pinion nose that is lacking in the Mopar, as I recall. That is why 4x4 axle builders build the Ford over the Mopars.

early Carter TQ is the only way to go. Don't take my word for it. Check out Shepherd's "How to Hot Rod the Small Block Mopar" Late factory cast intake and TQ outflow and have better manners than anything aftermarket. Handy charts here: http://www.holley.com/data/TechService/Technical/Selecting%20A%2...

Re: Is a 413 out of a burned RV worth anything?

ChiZler B/RB's run hot anyhow. All you have to do is say "start" and the manifolds glow orange. They're notorious for carbonizing spark plug wires and burning out valve cover gaskets. Grab it. The MH engines are sometimes different, sometimes not. The obvious difference will be a high-mount water pu...

Re: Better gas milage or waste of time?

RULE #1: One of the big problems with these trucks is aerodynamics, or the lack of. That is why your gas mileage drops to about nothing when you're pushing a headwind. The engine RPM is the same, road speed is the same but you're pushing the gas pedal through the floor to overcome the wind drag. Get...
