Re: Lowered leaf spring question

Ha. These are low carbon forgings typically in 1018 that therefore have a great deal of tolerance with heat from bending and welding. Just not an issue and is done everyday. Forged axles are stretched 2-3" and are able to do so without pre or post heat cycles for the same reason.

Re: Lowered leaf spring question

It depends how far off it is but most heat and bend the steering arm that is mounted to the spindle.

Re: 68 Lowering - combo drop axle and drop springs

A 3" dropped axle (with dropped tie rod ends) will result in an acceptable scrub line. I have essentially a stock v-8 (5 spring) pack but with a new main leaf that has both eyes turned downward. The stock ride is maintained. If you're using the original steering box, you will need a W100 pitman arm ...

Re: 68 Lowering - combo drop axle and drop springs

I can tell you that from my personal experience, the 4-leaf slant 6 pack doesn't work (at all) well with a V-8. Going to 3 springs with a V-8 would be far worse. It's best to get the drop you want via other means (i.e. an axle drop, reversing the spring eye that is currently turned up and or a sprin...

Thanks much. That's the one I would like. I'm not sure why mine came with a 6" arm.

Re: Lowered leaf spring question

You can add leafs the same as you can remove them but each time you go through that process, you'll be replacing the straps that hold the springs together (unless you have the bolt-on style).

Re: Early Scarebird D100 caliper bracket question

A flathead bolt has beveled sides like the attached picture. The included angles available are generally 82 and 90 degrees.

Re: CPP Pitman Arm

Thanks JL. That's interesting. I look forward to getting your measurement. I seem to recall they said mine was for a Chevy kit but I don't recall why. It seems one was thinner and required a washer and the other didn't.

Re: Early Scarebird D100 caliper bracket question

I would search for flathead allen grade #8 bolts the countersink the plate so the heads are flush. You'll end up with a much stronger bolt and the bracket will not be compromised.

Re: Lowered leaf spring question

Is your lowering project with the new spring pack only or did you also have the axle dropped further? Either way, make sure to check the height of the pitman arm hole center (for the drag link) to the center of the steering arm (thickness) to confirm those points are roughly level with the truck on ...

Re: Lowered leaf spring question

Are you checking length without comparing the arc of the 2 spring packs? If the arc is less on the new springs, that may be the issue. I have both spring eyes turned downward on my 65 (on otherwise OEM springs) and the front shackle is angled very similar to yours but, that's when the truck is on th...

$1k for grinding the valves, changing the seats and grinding them and, resurfacing the head is (per costs in my area) quite high unless he's doing more than what I've listed. I have $400 in machine work on mine but in addition to resurfacing the gasket surface, I had them cut the heads for larger va...

CPP Pitman Arm

For those of you with the CPP 400 series steering box, what pitman arm did you order with your P/S package? I'm mainly interested in the center to center distance from the steering box shaft center to the drag link rod end hole center. Mine is 6" and I'd like to find a 7.5". I've contacted CPP but t...

Re: Started floors

I'm not sure on the answer to your question but others will surely know. It would be good to see you document your sequence of the floor repair (if it's not too late). Did you use a spot weld cutter on the floor edge seam at the edge of the step?
