Re: Slots in Firewall for Master Cylinder
Hey thanks Wildergarten. Now that makes sense. Hmm, I've never seen anything like that before on either of my trucks. I wonder if POs removed them when changing the master cylinders or that is a homemade/special piece from your truck. I'll look into going that route since it more maintains the origi...

Re: Slots in Firewall for Master Cylinder
Wildergarten, I'll probably follow your suggestion of fabricating a sheet metal cover. I'm pretty sure there wasn't a vacuum booster on my truck. Since my truck is an automatic, there's a factory block off plate on the firewall where the hydraulic clutch would normally be. Guess I'll copy that so it...

Re: Slots in Firewall for Master Cylinder
PwrWgnDrvr, Thanks so much for the info. If I understand you correctly, it appears the factory used a brake master cylinder with a large enough mounting flange to hide (cover) the slots. But with no gasket, rain water surely would have leaked into the cab unless the factory caulked or otherwise seal...

Re: Slots in Firewall for Master Cylinder
Well, it is nice to hear the consensus is the holes are original. However, the master cylinder on my truck wasn't original when I bought it so I can't see what the factory did about sealing the slots. Thanks for all of your observations and input. I'm eager to hear what any of you may have done to s...

Re: Slots in Firewall for Master Cylinder
I considered that but the pedal mounting box on the inside comes off the firewall right next to these slots so there isn't room for a large washer on the inside. And if I make a covering plate for the outside to fit under the master cylinder I'm afraid that will affect brake pedal pushrod length in ...

Slots in Firewall for Master Cylinder
Hello All, The firewall on my 68 D100 has four slots-not holes-for the brake master cylinder. The slots look original and not PO-made. The four bolts in the master cylinder (from a 72 D100) fit through the inner portion of the slots but the master cylinder leaves uncovered the outer portion of the s...

Drummerdad,
Sounds like you have a plan and quite a project ahead of you. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Re: Crossmember removal
I believe you are talking about removing the crossmember which has the two transmission mounts on it correct? IIRC there are two rubber L shaped mounts on the crossmember, one on either side of the trans. If that is the case, then you will need to cut a section from the center of it then add a lower...

Re: 318 LA Mounting Boss and Mounting Brackets
OK, I believe I was able to answer my own question. What was really throwing me off was the single bolt hole on the engine's rear boss for the passenger side bracket. I went to the local junkyard and found a 87 B350 van with a 360 in it. I pulled the passenger side engine bracket and noticed that en...

Re: Rear Drum Brake Parts Source
I recently went through this on my 68. I needed to replace everything brake related on both sides of my rear axle except for the parking brake levers. I was able to find everything with the help of an excellent counter man at my local NAPA store. Some of the parts needed to come from other stores bu...

Re: Banging noises mystery
As builder mentions, my first impression was a driveshaft spline problem. Driveshafts have a wonderful ability to amplify their problems. If you haven't located the issue yet, as someone posted earlier, I suggest you raise the rear end onto jack stands (after chalking it really well) then have a lis...

Re: 1968 NP435 - gear chatter on deceleration
I'm curious about what you discovered. However, the holidays and time most assuredly got in the way. Any movement yet? If you are sure the bang and the current fluttering were/are from the transmission then I agree-it has got to come out and sooner rather than later. Things will only get worse and t...

318 LA Mounting Boss and Mounting Brackets
Hello All, The original 318 out of my 68 D100 was not rebuildable so a 1976 318 was used. On the passenger side of the 76 block there is only one bolt hole in the rear boss for the engine mount bracket. My 68 318 had two bolt holes in the rear boss for the two bolt holes in the engine bracket. Also,...

The PO filled them in, along with all the holes for the emblems too, during the hot rod transformation.

Thanks very much. Your photos and descriptions were exactly what I needed. Good thing I asked b/c once again, reality differed greatly from what I was thinking!!

VIN Tag Placement
When I bought my truck it was in pieces and the PO began the process of making some sort of hot rod out of it. The VIN tag was screwed into the cowl in the engine compartment near the master cylinder. It matches the number on the frame so I know the tag is correct. I removed the tag from the cowl, c...

Re: Gear box grease
I had mine rebuilt at Benchworks and here is what they told me to do: Every 5 years shoot hi-temp lithium/moly grease into the grease fitting until grease oozes out. I'm not sure if yours has a grease fitting or not but my 68 D100 does. If you want to discuss this with a pro who knows his craft, cal...

Yeah, mine too for the most part. It is probably a tough life down there. Still, I can see that each was either a white or beige previously.
